Mr. Peter- has long since won the fame of a logic- al, clasical and eloquent write, as well as speaker. The subjectof Mr. Peter- son’s discourse was; ieAgleep at their Posts’? The paper was not only in- siructive and appropriate, but was delt with so effectually, asto admit of no justifiable criticism, all gaps being filled by him. The paper was discussed by Messrs Boston, Fasesett, F. D. Lee, Burrelland others. The Chita- que will be addressed next Sunday by the Honorable Representative Grov- enor, of Ohio, the friend of the colored man. Good music will be proyided for the occasion. COMING CHANGES. Superintendent Geo. F. T. Cook is having a hard time with supervising principal Waring. Some time ago jwWhen Mr. Waring was quarantined it | became neccessary for Mr. Cook to |transier two or three pupils. After |Mr, Waring returned he retransfered ro gale that Mr. Cook had trans- terd. The Superintendent again made his rounds and found that supervising principal Waring had undone what he had done. Again Mr. Cook, sent the children back, where they have since remained. The acton of Mr. Waring should have been reported to the school board and his dismissal ordered, but up to date nothing has been done with nim. It 1s nowa ques- tion of conjecture as to who is_boss. Mr. Cook, or Mr. Waring. It is said that Mr. Waring is backed up by his trustee. This of course cannot be true as Mrs. Terrell would have certainly dismissed Mr. Waring if the matter ‘had been reported to her. sir. Cook, jas the head of the colored schools jshould ascertain from whether, the action of Mr. Waring, dosent justify his dismissal from the schools. year. From the most reliable sources, Mr. Cook will be succeede:! by a young man of ability; Miss Lucy Moten, will be succeeded by Miss Mattie Shadd; Prof. H. M. Brown will very likely succeed Prof. Montgomery in the high school, or take the directurship otthe Industral department. There will also be some changes in the super- vising principal-ship. ‘1 here will be an entire reconstruction of every branch of the industral department. JUDGE COLE DECIDES. Judge C. C. Cole, rendered his decis- ion in the Czrson case Friday morning holding that Justice Church had no authority to imprison Col. Carson for @ontempt as the offense was committed gutof the jurisdiction of the Court. wyers P. W. Frisby and Tracy L. Jeffrods represented Col. Carson. JUDGE KIMBALL AND THE CAPERS. In the Police Court this week, law- yer John A. Moss called the attention of Judge Kimball to the inteference of prossecuting attorney Pugh’s assist- ant, with his cases. Mr. Moss was very indignat and said some very un- complimentry things about Mr. Pugh’s assistant, which caused Mr. Pugh to rise and charge Mr. Moss with being worse caper aroundthe Police Court. Judge Kimball took a hand in the war of words and remarked that these capers can be seen daily around and in front of the Police Court, and if one is brought before him he will be severly delt with. It is a noted fact that there is more caping done among certain colored lawyers around the Police Court than any other class of men. No lawyer’s clients are safe and there is no doubt that judge Kimball has endeavored to raise the dignity of his branch of the Police Court as well as judge |Scott. The colred lawyers are to | blame, dozens of them can be seen | every morning, either standing in the hall or in front of the Court Caping forclients. It is a shame and disgrace | to the legal profession and a reflection upon colored attorneys. { Judges Scott and Kimball are in no wise prejudiced against colored at- torneys and if they get themselves in trouble it will certainly be no fault of the two Courts. The colored attorney is in a positon to make himself a pow- er inthe courts it he only conducts himself properly. A BLACK SKIN REMOVER. Then, it was said that colored singers hada peculiar melody of their own, were patronized for that, (jubilee singers) but actors and companies composed of colored artists, producing clever skits, original comedy sketches and even daring the most difficult operatic productions—never! Sucha fete, however has been accomplished by Mr. John W. Isham of Octoroon and Oriental America fame. Starting at the bottom of a mountain that it had never been thought possible to sur- mount on account of the numberless difficulties and great opposition to be > overcome both from the stage, and, Mr. Isham bravely set out to the task, and with a superabundance of tact, business ability and an indomitable will, has succeeded beyond his most sanguine expectations, and today he has an aggregation second to none on the stage of comedy. To him shonld be accorded the title of master of col- ored stage followers in America, for many, in fact 90 per cent of the colored performers now receiving lucrative salaries, and in many cases occupying conspicuous positions in the various companies who have found it a paying business to employ colored talent, are graduates of the Isham school.
