If there is any department of our school system which is in need | of the fine-tooth comb, it is the High School. In the first place this| city can boast of having the young- est and at the same time the most fastidious set of teachers the coun-| try over. This is a compliment which, whi'e it may not come up| to the best idea, has yet a tinge of | colored superiority over other sys} tems In times past, teachers in our High School have been selected because they knew something and had some interest in the well being of the children or parents. Now the test of acceptability seems to lay in consideration of fine dress, fine looks and fine parentage. Then too our High School can boast of cur riculum which is simply gorgeous. We no longer pay special attention tothose branches which are useful in ordinary affairs and upon which most men and women have won their title tu usefulness and respect bu’ devote ages, as it were, toward ginger breadism and all that helps to develop vanity and pride and foolishness. Aside from the few straggling notions a pupi! gets of mathematics, history, and rhetoric while at school, he might as well not be in school. The redeeming feature, of there is any in the High School is that which may be found in the training which Prof. Brown gives, when he has an opportunity, to his pupils. He isa practical worker, believes that we must know how to do something instead of constantly talking about it. He is of the opinion that we do more when we by experiment, detect useful ele- ments which can be utilized toward making mankind happier and better than when we after the use of any amount of application and! resort to ‘‘ponies’’ discover a Greek not. Evidently there is something wrong in the general management of the High School. We do not, nor could we justly blame any par- ticular teacher or set of teachers. But we think it is the general scheme of construction which is in error and hope soon to see the weak points strengthened, useless timber removed 224 a course of study pursued which in some sort | of way meets the requirements of| the race. We cannot afford to send our boys and girls to school tg be instructed in foppery, ginger breadism and a little bit of com- mon sense. THE ELECTION OF SENATOR HANNA. The re-election of Hon. M. A. Hanna to the Senate is of more PS than ordinary significance. it stamps upon the times the necessity of abiding by the instructions of the people as well as the penalty of | Iscariotism. The recalcitrants who leagued with the Democrats to de- feat the will of the party majority have met with the sort of thrash- ing which is due them and from the effects of which they will not soon recover. McKisson, the ring leader will surely be snowed under at the next election while the rest will come in for their share of op- probrium. We congratulate the party and Senator Hanna on their victory for JUDGE KIMBALL RENOM- INATED. President McKinley has seen fit to renominate Hon. I. G. Kimball, Judge of the Police Court to suc- ceea himself. THE Brx as well as others have opposed this reappoint- ment and endeavored toconvince the President that the reappointment of Judge Kimball would be a mistake. We believed then as we do now that Judge Kimball’s reapppointi ent is an unwise one and an imposition upon the people in this community. Personatly we like Judge Kimball and believe him to be a man of honor, but as a Judge of the Police court he has not exercised that judi- cial mind that one would suppose from his six year’s experience. Just how the President could make up his mind to reappoint Judge Kim- ball we are unable to state Tue Bre has opposed him and it did all in its power to defeat him but failed. We suppose it was the intention of the President to satisfy the temperance elemerts who are a set of religious cranks. Judge Kimball has made mistakes no one will attempt to deny, but to what extent no one knows but the law- yer who practices before him. One thing THE Bre will give Judge Kimball credit for he has made a bold fight and has never lost his temper nor has he abused any one who has opposed his reap- pointment. Now that he is reap- pointed he should be confirmed and so far as The Bee is concerned it used every honorable means to de- feat him but failed and since it failed it will not oppose him any further. The President we suppose was made satisfied that Judge Kimball PROF. GREENER GOES T INDIA. = The President sent to the Senate Thursday the name of Prof Richard Theodore Greener, to be United States Consul at Bombay, India. Senator Hanna showed himself to beaman of nerve and brilliant parts. .No man has the confidence of the country more than Mr. Hanna. Yes the lawyers have been dis- cussing the judgeship this week. Judge Kimball has been quite anx- ious to know about himself, sup- pose he is now satisfied as the agony is over. There is a great deal to be done in our public schools. I am of the opinion that the industrial depart- ment is in need of re-organization. The trustees are too slow. Mr. Harry Cumings was in town this week on business. SENATOR HANNA ELECTED HE DEFEATS THE COMBINATION. Columbus, O., Jan. 12th., Marcus A. Hanna was elected to succeed himself for both the long and, short terms as United States Senator | today. A joint ballot of the legislature | gave him 73 votes to7o for Robert E. | cKisson, of Cleveland, and one for John J. Lentz, of Columbus. The general hasten: metin joint session | at 12 o’clock with all present but Rep- resntative Creamer, who was ill. Lieut. Gov- Jones presided and immediatly announced that a vote, would be taken to elect a United States Senator forthe short term. Senator Marcus A. Hanna wasn omi- nated by Senator Garfield, who made a brilliant speech. The name of Rob- ert E. McKisson, mayor of Cleveland, was presented by Senator Burke, an anti- Hanna Republican. He said there was no gap which could be filled alone by one man. Representative Roberts, of Cleve- land, seconded Hanna’s nomination and Representative Bramley, also of Cleveland,'stood sponsor for McKisson£ ‘The vote was taken and resulted: Hanna, 73 McKisson, 7oand Congress man Lentz of Columbus, 1. The ballot for the long term resulted as did the former Mr. Hanna had just the re- gussie number of votes for election. here are 145 members in both houses Coloveil :; and 73 isa bare majority. Had repre- sentative Craemer, been present and the vote for Lentz been gven to McKisson, the result would have been the same. There is great rejoicing among the friends of Senator Hanna over the re- sult of the long and hard battle. The Republicans who voted against Hanna are Senator Burke, Representatives Bramley, Scott, Rutan, Jones and Otis, and Speaker Mason. In the senate today Senator Burke, of Cuyah- oga, rose to a question of personal pri- vilege and introduced a resolution | providing for an investigation of all bribery charges and espcially that $1,750 was offered for a vote for M. A. Hanna. Judge Kimball is a conscientious man, we believe, but his decsions in minor offenses have not been in conformity to law which we can show. He is reappointed and since the jovial fellow and will no doubt make good Councilman. Mrs Trustee Terrell returned to the city last week and gave a grephic description of her south- ern trip. She was royally enter tained and her speeches were re- ceived with enthusiasm. The civil service law will prob- ably be modified. Indeed some- thing had better be done. The District Commissioners are very slow in making colored ap- pointments. Nota colored repub- lican has yet been appointed under the District government. President is satisfied, he ought to be confirmed. It is a mistake. Among the imany friends of the Bex we are proud to mention Mr. B. A. Allen, chief of the Rocord- ing Division of the Auditor for the P. 0. D. In the conduct of his office, Mr. Allen shows marked ability, fairness and manliness. Toward the clerks of his office, without regard to race, color or re- ligion, le has maintained a rule of absolute fairness. The colored clerks feel assured that they have in Mr. Allen a true fciend. Messrs, Jackson and Richardson, two col- ored clerks in Mr. Allen’s division are enthusiastic in their praise and our knowledge of the character of their cheif fully justifies it. We bespeak for Mr. Allen a successful administration. Register B. K. Bruce has gotten down to business. He has answer- ed upwards of fully 5000 telegrams and letters of congratulations since his appointment. The Begs is satis- fied that it made no mistake when it suid that Mr. Bruce was the most popular man in the country. | Lhe President has made no mistake, Commissioner J. W. Ross is well and hearty and is quite sure that matters will now go on smoothly. At the end of the year there will be some important changes-in our public schools. Our schools are very much in need of reorgan- ization. There seems to be kicking repub- licans all over the country. This is on account of the party being disorganized. OUR HIGH SCHOOL. The Bex desires to call the at tention of trustees Haines and Ter- rell of the High and Normal Schoo} Gommittee to the embarrased con- dition in which our teacher in physics is placed. We know that The present excise board is rath- er cireumpect. It will some day find itself legislated out of office. The colored attorney was the theme at the Congressional Tyeeum last. Sunday. Pres‘dent Martin should both trustees are alive to the inter- est of our schools and will be will- ing to do all in their power to rem- edy any evil that may effect the best interest of the school. Let these trustees reform our High School, since trustee Bruce failed to remove the obstacle. Let us have areform in our schools, JUDGE McCOMAS. ‘The fight of the Maryland Re- publicans against Hon. Louis E. McUomas is unjust and cowardly. Judge McComas would be a fine representative in the Senate from the State of Maryland. We are confident that he is the choice of the people. We still hope that the outcome will be in Judge McCemas favor.
