From The New Orleans Republican, What should be called a monster overflow meeting was the assemblage of regular republicans at the G. A. R. hall on the 13th inst., to honor the re- turn of Hon. Henry Demas, recently appointed Naval Officer for the port of New Orleans. SS CAL. SS It was an enthusiastic, distinctly re- publican meeting, and all things con- nected therewith were carried on at a corresponding lively gait. The hall had received the artistic touch of the hand of the decorator, and ‘‘Old Glo- ry” fell in graceful folds above the speaker’s platform. The scene was cheerfully brightened and enlivened by the festoons of gray moss and gayly colored lanterns suspended in the air and a brass band. Long before 8 o’clock the hall was hterally packed like sardines in a box with a vociferous crowd of old and young republicaas and battle-scared warriors, eager to pay their tribute of respect and honor to their leader and champion of the race. Honorable and Comrade Henry Demas, who for the past six months continuously had been in Washington battling to maintain and preserve the principles of true re- publicanism, as against the onslaughts of his enemies, who would have the Grand Old Party amend its fundamen- tal platform with a plank of race prejudice.
