SECRET ORDERS EDITORIAL SYNOPSIS. Nothing is more distasteful in secret orders than “‘crank leaders,” 1 mean men who have the positions and allow their craniums to become evaporated. Leaders proper, in politics, religion, or secret orders, are the men who run the machine in other words lay offthe designs. Considerable trouble has been caused in churches, politics and secret orders by ‘‘crank leaders‘? We are now enjoying a specimen in the D.C. In looking over the papers there is a great kick about the colored | people not getting proper treatment | from the whites. We will admit that a great many things have been un- done, etc., but our advice to the Ne- gro of this great country is to adopt the motto of united efforts and mutual benefits. Secret orders teach us that “United we stand, divided we fall,” and no secret order can prosper where the leaders conflict. A true leader never allows his head tobe swelled. It is only the small official who sees himself from a magnified standpoint. Such men are always better outside than in, because by their crankiness they impede the progress of their or- der and spread dissension in its midst, and the result is, lots of trouble fol- low. The only way such men can be reached is by the ballot. Members of orders should bearin mind one thing, the best men for the places. The same rule can safely be used in churches and politics, etc. I trust cer- tain individuals in the D. C. will take atumble. No institution will prosper that does not carry out its aims and principles as laid off on the Trestle Board, etc. Take such leaders as Frederick the Great, General Grant, Napoleon Bonaparte and others that we could name and it will be found that they were unassuming in every particular.
