The annual sermon to the order of} Good Samaritans was preached last Sunday at 3 p. m., at Bethlehem Bap- tist church by the Rev. J. Matthews. | It was a masterly effort, and was one well appreciated by the members of the order present. Large attendance, Mrs. S. G. Brown was so unfortunate as to step upon a pebble and injure her ankle last Monday forenoon. The sprain necessitated the use of a crutch, The Willing Workers of Bethlehem church are preparing for a grand enter- tainment to be given at an early date. The funeral obsequies of Helen A. Watson, the beloved daughter of Mrs. Eliza and the Rev. Sandy Alexander, were conducted last T: ay from the First Baptist church of West Wash- ington. She was the sister of Mr: Maria G. Davis of this village. Ser- vices were conducted by Rev. J. A. Taylor ¢ hiloh. ‘‘She is not dead but sleepeth.”’ The floral offer- ings were numerous and_ beautiful. Many friends from Hillsdale were} present. Resolutions ot condolence and sympathy were read by the super- peiintendent of the Sunday school. Last Sabbath at Hillsdale Station church Rey. Thomas officiated at the | morning service. At8p. m. the pas- tor, Rev. J. B. Washington, preached from the text, ‘The half has never been told.’’ Excellent music was ren- dered by the choir under the leader- ship of Mr. M, W. Wilkinson. To-morrow at 11 the pastor will dis- cource upon the subject of ‘‘ Love.” At 7.30 p. m., he will preach a special sermon, after the sacrament of the Eucharist will be solemnized. The carts, picks, shovels, etc., which have been lying around the scene of the contemplated grave yard, have been removed since th: last publica- tion in THE BEE. Have they given up in despair ? Miss Georgia Simpson writes from Europe that she is greatly enjoying her vacation, and that she hopes to re- turn in the fall much benefitted in every way by the sea voyage. After the last communication she was touring Ger- many. Mrs. Luther Johnson at whose grounds the Idleside Club will give their garden party is prepared to re- ceive boarders for the summer. See her ad in ancther place. Tue Bee paid a visit to Prof. S. G. Brown last Monday evening and was royally entertained. Being shown through his library, we much admired his system of indexing pamphlets. Dr. Stevenson of the Pension of- fice has purchased a fine home on Nichols avenue, near our friend C, W. Davis. Dr. Scott has removed from Nichols to Sumner avenue. The doctor is meeting with much success. Mr. Pendleton, the printer, has reatly improved his residence. He as now a handsome dwelling, Miss Lizzie Collins is at present in Prince Williams county, Va. Miss E. Banks and sisters have opened the dry goods store, formerly occupied by Miss J. Simpson. Thomas Roles, of Boston, Mass., are stopping at Mrs. Johnson’s cottage, ; Stanton avenue. j A dinner was given at thé house of Mrs. Annie E. Brown in honor of Rev. J. H. Payne, of Cincinnati, O., who was visiting the Christian Endeavor Convention and the many friends of his old home. Among the guests were Revs. I. L. Thomas, D. D., of Asbury ; Griffin, of Benning and Gal- loway, of Falls Church, Virginia. Mrs. Brown will soon leave for her mission field in the west. Her frends wish her much success in the work for the Master. Excursions from Roanoke, Va., on the oth of August and one from Fred- ericksburg, Va., August 24th, will go to the Douglass hotel. HERMAN.
