Be Stationed at Constantinople to Look After American Interests Washington, Jan. 7—One Unitec States was vessel will be sent to Con tinople to protect American inter there. This action was decided upon at a recent Cabinet meeting, but has been delayed by the difficulty of finding a vessel small enough to comply with the treaty stipulation that only “light despatch boats” shall be permitted to To pass through the Dardenelles without] 201 C Street, - the Sultan’s express permission. There are but few vessels in the United States Navy of that description, and most of them are not now available for this service. It has become, therefore, a difficult matter to pick out a vessel small enough for the duty and modern enough to reflect credit on America. This is the only foundation for the alarmists story recently printed about the forthcoming “great naval demon- stration” to be made by this country against Turkey to compel payment of indemnity for damages to American citizens in the Turkish dominions. In- stead of proposing to send a great fleet of war vessels to Turkey, the Admis- | tration is simply preparing to send a small despatch boat, which cannot even aspire to the dignity of a gun- boat. | The last time it was deemed aec23- sary that the United States should be presented in the harbcr at Coustan- tnopl-: was in 1870, during the Francu- Irussian war.
