In the light of these reasons we have no hesitancy in placing at the head of our columns the name of Wm. McKinley as our choice for the high office of Presi- dent of the United States. It is a record which makes ludicrous the eharge that Major McKinley is a “‘one idea” man, for his speeches delivered during the stormy days following reconstruc- tion are pregnant with patriotism, with fervor in the cause of the op- pressed, whether white or black, and characteristic in the breadth and range of information, ~ There has not been an important measure af- fecting the rights and liberties of the people since the war upon which he has not been prominent as an - ——= if HE HAS PAINS- Taylor sent word to Cooper by one ; 3 vaste ~ «| tract, and if he didn’t he would indict Church in Africa. He is Said to Have Advised the Home Gov- ernment to Grant the Island Self-Gov- ernment—Madrid Anthorities Greatly Alarmed Over the Situation and to Get Very Little Satisfaction From His Dis- patches—Mayarl and Other Places Taken by the Insurgents} New York, Aug. 13.—A special to the World from Havana, dated August 8, says that General Campos has resigned the Captain-Generalship of Cuba. It is generally bélieved that he strongly urges the home government to grant the island of Cuba self-government. All telegrams from Madrid clearly show that not only the government over there, but also the people, are greatly alarmed by the developments in Cuba, and that General Campos’ replies to the Cortes must be very unsatisfactory. It fs rumored that General Campos wiil leave for Spain soon, as he wants to give a personal account of the oe of affairs in Cuba to the Queen &nd Court. A Madrid newspaper, El Qui tains comments on Spain’s Cuba and the latter’s natural rights. As soon as the newspaper began to cir- culate it was seized by the government. Copies are now being sold for $5 each. General Campos arrived this morning from Nuevitas, where he went tO ascer- tain the truth about the latest battle. Here nothing is known further than that it was a desperate struggle for victory on both sides, and that over 700 men were left dead on the field. Gen- eral Gomez commanded the insurgents. General Mello, who led the Spanish forces, is reported killed. Mayari is said to have fallen into the hands of the insurgent forces, and the provisional Government of the Cuban republic is reported to have been estab- lished there. Santo Espiritu. and Trinidad, in Las Villas, are said to be in possession of the rebel forces. The land of Gen. Roloff and Serafin Sanchez in Villas has not been published offict: here, but it was telegraphed to Madrid, Gen. Angel Guerra is said to have had a fierce battle with a strong §) A force, presumably under Gen. a ides. The details are not kno’ it must have been a very sanguinary affair. The Spanish columns were at- tacked by infantry in the front and cav- alry in the rear. A battle has been fought very near Matanzas, but the bee sult is unknown here. The heat is unbearable and the yellow fever continues to sweep away the im- ported soldiers by the hundreds. Rain continues to fall in torrents every day, and the air is thick and saturated.
