The colored people who have heretofore had but little confidence in colored lawyers are realizing the fact that they guardtheir terest better and defeud them with as much zeal as the more fortunate white member of the bar. The idea prevailed among cer- tain classes of colored people that a colored attorney was not respect- ed in the courts as much as his broth erin white. There is vota judge on the bench who entertains the slightest disrespect for a colored member of the bar. If anything the colored attorney is treated with more consideration, No judge has avy respect for an ignoramous at the bar any more than the people who employ one to attend to their business. All that the court demands is respect and no gentleman will be disrespectable to the court. There is but one draw back to our lower courts and that is the right to appeal from either branch of our lower courts. Among a few of the colored at- torneys who are doing well the Ber takes this opportunity of naming James H. Smith, who has a large civil practice and no doubt one of the oldest colored members of the bar; John A. Moss, who atone time had the largest civil and criminal practices of any mem- ber of the bar, but, his defense of officers who club colored people, which was no fault of bis, has caus ed his practice to fall off. W. C. Martin, deals largely in pension claims, civil and criminal practice. BS. Smith and J. F. Bundy are max ing an extensive civil practice, E. M. Hewlet is a justice of the peace, and he also has a large civil ané criminal practice; L. W. Pulies deals in pension claims and no doubt has the largest pension busi ness of any colored attorney. He has in his enployment a very ac complished type writer and short hand lady assistant. The colored attorney is an object of the present and not of the past. J. M. Ricks is making money and he knows how to keep it, Ricks is a hustler. —————————— NEVER BE PRESIDENT. There is some talk about making Senator Cameron the nominee of the republican party in 96. This certainly mast be a joke on the part of the managers of the re- publican party. if Senator Cameron should be the successful nominee of the re- publican party in 96, every negio would leave the party. The negroes would just as leave support a democrat as they would support a republican of the Cam eron stripe. If the republican managers want to see a real live and healthy di- vision in the colored vote let the repablican convention nominate Senator Cameron. Tbe negroes will think for them- selves in the fature; they don’t propose to allow otbers to think for them and express their thoughts as being their own. THE STRIKE, There has been a boycott declar- ed against the Pullman Palace Car Company by the American Rail- way Union. It is about time that national legislation should be made agaiust an organized body of men who do nothing but make efforts to de- stroy our great institutions. Boycotting should be made pun- ishable by imprisonment and noth- ing less. if the northern capitalists would give the negro a show In the rail road service there would not be so mach trouble in the country among laborers. The people should open their eyes. THE SHYLOCKS. This city is famous for negro enterprisee. These enterprises and schemes are not inaugurated by the citizens, but by a class of played out politicians, who have no reputation at home and who come to this city and impose upon the citizens. i Tnere bas been no enterprise that has ever been started that bas pcoven to bea success. There are a lot of sharks who are fuil of tricks and scbemes who tell plaus- iable yarns and present to the peo- ple bogus enterprises all on paprr that exists long enough to rob the people, and then they disband with the peoples money in thiic pockets. The BEE is of the opivion that the feople have been robbed enough to puta stop to these bogus lustitations. These corrupt meti- ods have been used in this city ev- er since the emancipation of the negro and still the people continue to allow themselves to be hcod- winked by a set of political moute- banks, and dead beats who have no visible meaus of support. The ovly reliable institutions in this city , that tbe people can trus with safety are the Capital Savings and Alpha Banks. Do the citizens ever stop to ex amiue into the records of men who claim to represent these other bo- gus enterprises? Do the people; ever stop long evough to examine; tue character of these enterprises! No!! Casimer Peuer has been elected president of France. The general impression amoug the A- Meri¢sn legislators is that he is a good man and a fine statesm in. The cowardly assassination of the President of France by an Ira!l- ian name Santo was one of the greatest shocks to the civ lized world. If the negro democratic league of the District insists on having ne gro repablicang removed they should see that negro democrat: are appointed, There is a big fight in I //inois against Senator Colum. Our laws must be very defective that rail road companies cannot be protected against an unlawful boy cott that is being systematically ae eurated throughoat the coun ry. Oor public schools have been closed and the trastees, teachers, avd our super ntendent deserve the congra‘ulations of the people. IS HAMMETY RIGHT. Dr. C. M. Hammett, must do some 2323 to keep himself before the peo- ple. His last crazy move was to recom~ mend to the commsssioners the im portance of taking up all the pumps in the city, because the water is dis eased. If there ever was a man who didn’t have all that he should have, it is the present Health Officer. The well at the corner of 10th and K sts. n.w., has the finest water in the world and for fifty years Mr, John Seitz and his family have used this water. His children and great grand children have used this water and have never been sick.. Hammett is more offensive than the water. LRN ATTEN TRE SES MOI BE TS apr ac ta CARNOT ASSASSINATED. Anarchist.
