MRS. J. G. BLAINE, JR., DIVORCED. She Gets the Custody of the Child of the Ili-Starred Unton. The supreme court of South Dakota, in session at Sioux Falls, has granted an ab- solute divorce to Mary Nevins Blaino from James G. Blaine, Jr,, the younze: son of Secretary Blaine. The case w: allowed to go by default. Mrs. Blaine allowed alimony and the custody of her child. The case is one that has attracted much popular interest. In the summer of 1886, Miss Mary Nevins, one of the handsomest girls of Pittsburg, Pa., went to Bar Harbor, Me., for the season. The Blaines have a c tage at that resort and young James way soon a slave to Miss Nevins’ charms. After a brief courtship, the seashore lovers were married in New York city in September, 1886 It was generally known that Secretary of State James G. Blaine and Mrs. Blaine were much opposed to their son’s mar- riage. However, the newly-made hu:- band took his bride to Pittsburg, and with his salary asa reporter, and an al- towance from his father, he managed ta keep upa comfortable home. The young man is possessed of a roving disposition and he soon took his wife to New York city. He was a reporter there, but his father stopped his allowance. Then he went into a broker's office, and shortly afterward his parents got control of him. In 1888 the couple separated, and Mrs. James G. Blaine, Jr., charged her hus. band’s family with having induced him to desert her. He had gone to Augusta, Me , and fora while lived at home. Thu wife followed and says she tried to in- duce him to return to her, but to no pur- pose. The Blaines were eager to get hold of the child, but they failed to do so Young Blaine said l1is peoy.le would will ingly care for it. Then the wife began her divorce pro- ceedings. The first step was to ask for $500 alimony and $300 counsel fees. For a long time the husband pleaded poverty and said he was unable to pay the money, At last a check was sent to her, it is said, by Secretary Blaine himself. The wife having had no means of sup- port, as she claims, prepared to go on the stage. She studied for some time and then was attacked with inflammatory rheumatism which checked her theatrica! career for awhile. She afterwards ap- peared before the fovtlights, but with ne great success. Dr. MeGlynn Hopeful. Dr. Edward McGlynn, in an interview, expresses himself as hopeful of being re stored to the Catholic priesthool, He “Cardinal Simeoni, the prefect of the propaganda, was prejudiced against me He died a few weeks ago and Cardinal Ledochowski was appointed in his place. “Archbishop Ireland, of St. Paul, reached Rome two days ago and I expect soon to be invited to a conference in Rome. I have every reason to hope that I will be restored to the ministry without fetracting the political and economic truths which I have preached and still preach.” — The Baby > mn Reports by waflingy TUE esas Seep eae Serta via Yoleano. In the cities and in the coun- try disorder is rampant, and there are a number of intelligent leaders at work fo- menting the spirit of discontent among the masses. Even priests, it is said, are found lead- ing bands of self-outlawed persons, and it may be remembered in this connection that it was an humble priest wha started the revolution which deprived Spain of Mexico. When the revolution- ary sentiment has reached the altar thera is danger in the air for the throne. Egyptian Intrigues. According to London dispatches Khe @ive Abbas requires that the Sultan shall send him a firman, formerly recognizing and confirming his authority, and that Abbas has sent a message to that effect toConstantinople. Thesultan’s reply has been that the khedive must come in_per- son to receive the firman. To this Abbas objects, as he thinks the sultan might take occasion to extort some concession. It is claimed that France and Russia are intriguing aguinst Great Britain at the sultan’s court and have inspired the course of that potentate in regard to the khedive, and that the issue has become a trial of strength between the powers concerned. A New Messiah Craze. A Messiah craze has broken out, and is now raging furiously among the Free Methodists of Iron Hill, oras it is known, “New Jerusalem,” in Jackson county, Iowa. Revival meetings have been held there for the past three or four weeks, with the result that the entire neighborhood is greatly agitated on religious matters, The revivals are conducted M& the old- fashioned shouting way, and people come from miles around to attend the meet. ings. The climax was reached a few days ago when the announcement was made in “Jerusalem” that a woman had given birth to a child that the promoters of the religious enterprise declared was none other than a second Messiah. tion In Austria, Skilled mechanics and others are flock- ing to Vienna from the Austrian provinces and from Hungary, hoping to find some help from their destitution. The fefugeés, most of whom are in ab- solute want, attribute their miseries to the McKinley law, which they think has resulted in throwing them out of work by crushing certain branches of Austrian industries which supplied the American markets. It is estimated 70,- 000 people are without work in Vienna. New Extradi Treaty With France. The Secretary of State is negotiating a new extradition treaty with France, sim- ilar in its terms to the ohe recently con- cluded between the United States and Great Britain. The negotiations have reached a point that virtually assures a favorable conclusion. NEW TYPEWRITERS! — THE— “INTERNATIONAL. - Nos, J and 2. Warranted Indestruetable Align ent.
