4 ‘ ) Acasa! HANGED A CORPORAL. Murderous Act of Discontented British Horse Guards. There was much excitement at the horse guards in London upon the receipt f © INTERNATIONAL. - of intelligence from Aldershot, where is situated a great military camp and bar- racks, that a spirit of murderous insub- ordination was prevalent in one of the regiments stationed at that place. It appears that a corporal of the Second Rattalion of the Prince of Wailes’s Lein- ater Regiment (Royal Canadians), which battalion is at present doing duty at Ald- ershot, had by his petty tyrannies ren- dered himself an object of peculiar aver- sion to the men. Complaints were made in the usual mil- itary form against the obnoxious corpo- ral, but they seemed to have no effect. Finally the men became convinced that they would find no relief by complaining, and determined to rid themselves of the corporal As the corporal was going his round he was seized by the men. He at- tempted to call for assistance, but his cries were speedily silenced by a gag. He was then informed of the fate in store for him, and despite his struggles | nearly like the Reming No. 2. was dragged without ceremony to a con- venient spot. around his neck, and willing hands soon nad him suspended in the air. The free end of the rope was made fast, and the self appointed executioners decamped. The corporal was discovered and cut down before the rope had done fatal work. A BLOW TO FRANCE’S HOPES. The United States Grand Jury in New | York filed an indictment for opium } smuggling against Thomas E. Chace in the United States circuit court. An ex- amination was set, but just before it was to have begun Assistant United States District Attorney Mott announced the finding of the indictment. Mr, O'Connell, attorney for Chace, said that he thought the finding of an indict- ment while the examination was still } pending was an outrage. The district attorney had had the case adjourned sev- eral times, and had given him to under- stand that he would request a further continuance until Saturday, while all the time Mr. Mott must have known that the case was going before the grand jury. It unfair and unjust to the defendant, ho must now stay in Ludlow street jail until after the holidays. Ex-Mayor Grace Resigns. A letter of resignation, which ex-Mayor William R. Grace has sent to Secretary Richard T. Greener, declining to act any longer as president and trustee of the Grant Monument Association, has caused a sel ion in New York. i The ex-mayor is disgusted. He is very ' much put out with the way affairs have shaped themselves in the past year, and the introduction into the management | of certain persons with whom he has ag ; community of interest whatever has not tended to al s annoyance. The Pope’s Temporal Power. At the session of the Austrian delega- tion in Vienna Herr Zollinger asked a question in regard to the papacy’s insist- ing upon its independence, claiming that the Church is not an Italian but an inter- national Catholic affair, and that the pope's claim to sovereignty in his own territory verfectly legitimate. Count Kaluoky replied that the people of Austria-Hungary wished peace with Italy. “Our alliance with Italy,” hecon- ; cluded, “forms the basis of our policy. The question of the pope's sovereignty can not be raised by us. without wound- * ing Italy's feelings.” } No Home Rule for Ireland. | In aspeech Mr. A. J.
