The efficient and acceptable choir of mixed voices of St. Mary’s P. E. Chapel. 23rd_ bet. G and H Sts. n, w., have been given vaca- tion during the present montb. Last Sunday a Special program of music of the charch was present- ed, which was beautifully and feel- ingly rendered. As the musical feature of an Episcopal church is essentially a portion of its service, Visitors to this beautiful chapel may always be certain to be bene- fitted and edified. The choir is under the direction of Mr. J. W. Cole and comprised last Thursday the following voices: Sopranos, Mrs. Arthur Brooke, Misses Géor- gie Makeli, Lula Warner and Mamie Shepherd. Altos, Mrs. Frank Jones, and Mise Martha Randolph. Tenors, Messrs. Har~ ry Lewis, Albert Hall, and J. A. Johnson. Bassos, Messrs, J. W. Coe and A. K, Brodie, The Miss. es Virgie and Alberta Lewis mem- bers of the choir are away upon their vacation. The skillful and jwell known organist, Mr. Frank Jones, organist of the Chapel, has also been given a month’s leave of absence. The choir will resume its duties not later than the 2nd Sunday in September, and we suggest that those of our musical loving people who may co desire, make it convenient to attend some morning service, and hear the beautiful aod impressive chants and praises which have been sang for centuries, and still continue to be sung regularly and systematicaliy each Lord’s day by churchmen throughout all chris- tiandom, GLEASON’S GIFT. Dr. John R. Francis called on President Mitchell of the school board last week and abused the committee that waited onthe Dis- trict Commissioners in the interest of the Normal school graduates, among otber things was said by Dr. J. R. Francis are as follows: Dr. Francis:— Would you want your daughters to go to school toa teacher whose parents live in an alley in preference to a teacher who moves in the best society? The committee that called on the Com- missioners were ‘‘scallowags.’ If the above is not a most re- markable statement for a man to make who depends on the poorer classes of people for a living, the Bee does not know what is, : Prof. H. M. Browne of the High School, who was present when this statement was made, replied as follows : Prof. Browne:— Mr. Mitchell, excuse me, but I can’t stand here and allow Dr. Fraucis to make avy such statement as this without en- tering wy protest. Some members of the committee who waited on the Commissioners are Dr. Francis social and intellectual superiors. This is a display of ignorence.
