Montgomery has been justly styled “Montgomery the just.” The Bee can testify that he knows no man by his color. Judge The foreman of the Folding room government Printing office, Mr. Peonisks is the right man in the right place. be It is unecessary io get angry with the republican party because a few of its members are not sound on republican principles. If there is one thing that the colored race has been guilty of, it 1s falae leadership. It is true that there are men identified with the race who are true and honest in all they do, and again there are men who could never be seen advocat- ing the interest of the race while in office, can now be seen on the rostrum and elsewhere picturing the wrongs against the race. Be- ware of false leadership. It is not every man who cries from the house top for the race is a friend of the race. Let the people be on the look out tor these quisi leaders. ry The salvation of the Negro is in the republican party, the enemies of that pafty to the contrary not- withstanding. The principle of a brave soldier iapot to get frightened when re- onsgagy heard. Face the Senate; the colored voter is amazed and what to do is a ques- tion for him now to consider. President Harrison has done his duty; he has done everything in his power to urge Congress to en- act some law to protect the dis- franchised voter, he has appealed to Congress todo its duty, but, like a cowardly school boy the friends of liberty aud equality have been slaughtered. The Ne- gro has been waiting for the par- ty to redeem its pledges; the plat- form which was adopted at Chi cago guaranteed to the colored man the enforcement of his con- stitutional rights; but the enforce- ment of any measure looking to political emancipation of the col~ ored race is imagivary. The col- ored man can but live in bope, his emancipation will son come, whether the Federal Elections bill becomes a law or not. se THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS BILL. An Appzat To Tue Press, Gentleman: The hope of tair elec- tions is fading, The friends that once pledged themselves at a hun dred altars now stand perjured. The friend that may prevent the blood from ftowing afresh from the healing wounds of the race. The Federal Elentions Bill, that oft pledged boone to secure which we have lost a thousand martyred negroes every year since the War, now lies upon the marble cooling boards in the Senate of the United States. Eight Republican daggers are sticking in its heart; twenty Democrats have shrouded it for the tomb, its grave is dug. Do you propose to allow it to be bu- ried? There is stil, a spark of life in but it is only a spark. Can you see it die as hive. Gentlemen, if you are in favor of it at all, you must be strongly in favor ot it-it is a bill that makes strong parti- zans. You can write strong and able articles in favor of protecting industries from which a black man is shut out as if he were a leper. Have you nothing to say upon this measure except a few gloomy squibs to the effect that the Sen- ate is toocowardly to pass the bill? If we would bave a safe smooth road to the ballot we must blast our way through a solid rock of democratic opposition. * * * 620 Beantifal Illustrations ! as been pub- * Cuarues 8S, Morris, Je pre RICTLTUR HARRISON AND MORTON LEAGUE. This 1s not the time for a hope~ less chorous of I told youso’s; vot the time for gloomy forebodings and meloncholy predictions, now is the time for action. We are not whipped until we concede it. The reason the white people of the south are always victorious, is be- cause they will never concede de~ feat. The men to demand rights are the men to whom they are denied; and the time to do it, is when they are denied. ‘ae senti- ment of the world is that a man who wont fight for himself is nut wortb being fought for. We are past the time of nice distinctions, of arguments, of ex pedieacy we ure vow where we must c-mmend them or denounce threaten and destroy-we must either take sides with the eight in their mean, cowardly, treacherous and abject surrender or we must wage a fierce unflinching warfare against them, a battle without quit er quarter. Having been introduced by re- pubiicans, it has been endorsed by four-tifths of our race,.our papers are committed to it. Wherever three or four of our people were assembled, it has been endorsed. While there may be some dis- atisfaction among the District re- publicans, we can assure them that the district Commissioners mean to give them representa- tion. There is no map more fav+ orably disposed toward district republicans than the present board of Commissioners, and so far as Mr. Ross is concerned, who 12 a democrat, he has no pre- judice against a man on account ot his color or politics; Commis- sioner Douglass is in sympathy with the republican party and is no doubt but that he meaus, so far as he can, give district repub~| licans representation in the dis=- trict government.
