SenaTor Spooner CoNGRATULATED. A Large Meetina Monpay Nieurt. The Iarrison and Morton Re- publican League met at the Arm- ory of the Washiagton Cadets on last Monday evening with J. P. Crenshaw in the chair and W. H. Jones, s-cretary. This was the largest meeting held since the or- gan Zation of the League Among the new members ad- mitted were Capt., J. S. Coolidge, Dr.S .A. Sumby, Robt. R.SBrown and others. After the transaction of minor business, Mr. Jones ofi- ered the following preambles and resolutions which were unanimvus- ly adopted, Wuereas, Long defered justice to tne Negroace is now being declared in u biguous words, incapable of a double meaning by our friends at the National Capi- tol, and, Whereas, ‘here is a law of God, higher than any law, or constitution of the United States which unqualifiedly says, out oi one blood i have created all men to dwell upon the face of the earth, which is a truth, and truth alone being final, will invariably take care of itself, though crushed to earth, and, Wuereas, The Federal Elec- tions Bill now under consider- sion in the U. S. Senate, not on ly dwarfs all other suijects be- } cause of its immeasurable impor- | tance to the whole country, but it jenables an oppressed people to | know their friends now occupying j bigh and importaut places, “It | takes more courage to stand up in one’s seat in Congress and say the right thing than to walk up to tlfe cannon’s mouth, says Giddings, and Wuergas, Hin. Jno, Spooner, U.S. Senator, from the state of Wiscousin, in bis speech in favor of tie passage of the a bove meutioued bill, delivered 10 the Senate Dec., 20th 1890; Being a torciable and eloquent speaker, a man of superior ability and ex- tensiye acquaintance with men and events, covered himself with immortal glory; his historical argument was a perfect avalanche, under which the opposing party was therefure logically buried; Therefore be it resolved, That the Harrison and Mortoa Le#gue tender a serenade to Senator J. C. Spooner, immediately after the Mass meeting adjourns, which is now being arranged, to indorse Pres., Harrison’s late message to Congress; thus demonstrating to the Senator our appreciation of his invaluable services to us, as a race, in his great efforts to prove that Higher than the Tariff, Higher than Civil Service Reform, High- er than Political place or preter- ment, is the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, wherever located under the Flag of our Common Country. On motion of Mr, Chase, Drs. C. B. Purvis and F. J, Shadd were elected honorary members. A resolution was offered by Mr. Taliterro in memory of the late Dr. A. T. Augusta. The League adjourned to meet Monday Evening January 5th 91. At which time the League will el.et permanent officers. KEEPING CHRISTMAS WISE. LY.
