NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HIS AsSOCIATE DOES— THE FOLLOWING £XPLAINS. Washington, D. 0., Sept. 7th, °90. W. Calvin Chase, Esq., Editor Ber: Dear Sir :— I feel that the “‘Bee” has done me av injustice, by referring to me in Saturday’s issue, as an Staaa,” “rail-splitter” and the like. Mr, Chase, you have been a gentleman upon whom I looked with consider. able admiration and that you should, without canse, or the shad- ow thereof, employ your sheet to slander me, | cannot tell why. I begau my work with the “A gitan tor” this week, and am not in any way responsible for what appeared therein, last week : bpt ( can assure you that I have too much regard for myself, to allow hereafter, the publication of any personal griev- ances in the ‘Agitator.’ I of course refer to personal grievances. I believe now, as when I first saw your onslaught that you have un- knowingly wouaded a friend -1 care not what petty fielings might exist between you and Mr. Day, I do not think that you are jastifled in dragging my name through the Severe arraignment you had in store for him. I shall believe, an til otherwise informed or convinced that you willdo me ample justice as an editor. The “Agitator” is a feeble, young sheet, yet in a few months, the people of my section are going to make it their paper, because white papers deny us no~ tice, 2c. Again, I remind you that 1 am impressed that you certainly wrote my name in error. Shall [ be favored with a reply? Very truly yours, &ec. J. Frank Wheaton. 5 H. of R. Clerk’s Doe.,, Room, Capitol. Washington, D.C., Sept., 9, ’90. Dear Sir: Your letier of Sept. 7th was re~ ceived and in reply I will say that, it may be that I harshly criticised you in the Bee of Sept. 6th, but not unjustly. You and G.T. Day arethe editors and publishers of the Maryland ‘‘Agiiator” and are held responsible for whatever ap- pears in the paper, whether you are the author or not. You or Day, without cause made a cowardly attack on meand now you write and tel! me that you are not respon- sible for what your associate docs. It you don’t want to be held re- sponsible for what your chief mongrel does, take your name down from the colamns of that apology for anewspaper. I have nothing to retract nor have 1 any apology to offer, but exceedingly regret that you should be found in such dirty company. Very respectfully, Wm. Calvin Chase. +e STYLES IN FALL BONNKTS. The straw bonnet will be worn late in the season, it being no lon- ger counted an unusual sight to see a fur coat with a straw bonnet above it. Indeed, last year very many fashionable women wore dark straw bonnets all the season. Of course they were trimmed with velvet and had what might be call- ed winter decoratious upon them ; but they were, after all, veritable straw chapeox. The lady-like capot will undoubt edly retain its popularity. The rather flat trimmings are still fan- cid and consist of ribbon bows, flowers, grasses, small fruits of ber- ries and, indeed, whatever may be deemed becoming or adapted toa costume. A black lace straw has a puffed brim of golden brown vel- vet. In front, mashed down almost to the tevel of the crown, are three brown velvet wall flowers. The ties coming irom the back are ot brown velvet ribbon and are_loop- ed just under the chin. Ladies Home Journal. FRED. DOUGLASS AT CAMP. HON. Among the distinguished visitors at Wayman Grove camp meeting Monday, were Minister Fred. Doug- lass, his sou Lewis, Mrs. Martha Tacker and others. There was a large crowd present, to listen to Mr. Douglass, who was booked to speak that day. His address was full of logic and eloquence. Among other things he said that he would retarn to Hayti in October. Mr. KE. Murray, the well known caterer has a booth at Wayman Greve and it is one of the most at- tractive and best patronized booths on the grounds. Mr. Murray nev~ er fails to make a bit wherever he goes and it is only a question ofa little time that he will become one of the best known caterers in this country. Meals are served as us- ual and refreshments are in abun- dance at his booth. Mr. Doug~ lass and his party visited his booth and took dinner. They were higb- ly entertained, as Mr. Murray can well do wheneyer he is patronized. ————+. BEATTY’S TOUR OF THE WORLD. Ex-Mayor Daniel F.
