The BEE. Published every Saturday at 1109 I stree porth west, Washington, D. C. ntered at the Post Office at Washington D.C., as Second Class mail matter. W. CALVIN CHASE, Editor, SENATOR BRUCE-DAVIS. — | No one will attempt to say) what Hon. B. K, Bruce denies is not true. He is not the man to make an assertion, aud then deny | it. When the manuscript of Mr. | Davis’ was brought to this office, | we noticed the part relative to Mr. | Bruce, and we could not believe} for a moment that he made use of | the language attributed to him| and for that reason we sent one of | our reporters to him to ascertain | whether or not, he did say what) Mr. Davis charged bim with in bis} letter to the Gazetie, and the copy he left with us for publication. | Not that we desire to discredit what Mr. Davis said at all, but Mr. Bruce, who is 80 diplo-| matic in all that he says, we did’nt think it possible that he could sey what Mr. Davis attriba- | ted to bim. Mr. Davis undoubtedly misun-| derstood the Sevator, because | when he was asked whether he} did say what Mr. Davis charged him, he immediately said to our reporter, what Mr. Davis said to the Editor of this paper that he| was not paying any atteution to! “the conversation between Davis| and the 4th. Auditor relative to colored newspapers, and there- fore did not know what took place The telegram sent to the *Ga-| zelte” and publishad in last week’s “Bee” confirms what we say ow, | that Mr. Bruce did not use such | lauguage attributed to him in} Mr. Davis’ letter, and we think it} |the judical history of that city, representative colored men. We arecreditably informed that | Mr. Windom intends to make two | or three more good appointments | of worthy colored men, and it our} representatives will have a little) patience, the administration will treat the colored citizens fairly. The appointment of Col. Hollaud | is an evidence that the Northern | colored contingent will be looked | after. The appointment is very encouraging. We congratulate Col. Holland and so do the great number of his admirers aud followers. This appointment wil! give more satisfaction to the Negroes in the North than all that has been made so far. McCube of Kauses next. — __________ ___} i GRAY-RvVBINSON LI- BEL SUIT. The suit for slander by Miss Sarah A. Gray of Alexandria, Va, sgainst R. B. Robinson on last Friday, October 24, in the Court of Alexandria, Va , was one that will be long remembered in THE when it will be remembered that Jack Clemmons who claim to be in love with the lady assaulted the lady in his testimony. This} man Clemmons is known in this} city as the husband a of white wo- man whom he married in Phil., and brought to this city whe subse- quently left him and from whom he claimed he was divorced. He weut to Alexandria, Va., and re- presented himself to Mr. Wm. Gray, one of the most wealthy aud highly respected citizens of that city, to be worth several thou-~ sand and attempted to win the affections of Miss Sarah A. As all admired ladies do she ac- cepted Clemmons’ company until her futher forbid him to visit his house and the lady refused to have anything to do with him, From the testimony it seemed is bad taste for our esteemed con-| that the wife of the defeadant, temporary the “Gazelle” to pub-| Robinson, was jealous of Miss lish the matter after a telegram| Gray aud Clemmons who wrote her had been iecerved from Senator] Warning Ler against “Joe” as she Bruce. is called. Mr. Mout Lewis, a colored republican, under the last admin- istration was discharged, and it was through Mr. White that he was reinstated. Mr. Lewis was the only colored book binder in the office A WORTHY MAN. President Harrison and some of his Cabinet have shown some fairness in the distribution of the public patronage, as regards the colored race, But there is in our mind’s eye one young colored man who is highly deserving of recogntiion, but who has as yet been overlooked. We refer to R. S. Smith, than whom the par- ty has no more ardent supporter, and his race no more faithful re» presentativs. We think young colored men like Mr. Smith, who have, against adverse circumstan- ces prepared themselves for eftec- tive service, are entitled to con- sideration ix the distribution of the public patronage. Mr. Smith is well known in this community asa lawyer of ability, and there are several places under the ad- ministratiun that he could well fill. The Recordership is an unset- tled question which will be decid- ed soon. Minister Fred. Douglass arriv- ed at Hayti just in time to wit- ness the inauguration of Ilypo- lite. A correspondant frum the South informs us this week who is resposible for the wrongs in~ flicted upun the colored citizens, which is iu part no doubt true. In avother coluiwn of this pa- per will be founda letter from Mr. C. ©, Stewart, defending his wife. We all know Mrs. Stewart as a lady of refinement, and it is to be regretted that her husband should be so jealous of her. Of course he has never accused her of anything immoral, but it seems that his mother-in-law has caused all the trouble between the two. The Rev. Geo. W. Lice took ex- ceptions at what we said conceru~ ing his recent uvealled for attack ou our Congressmen, and threat- ens to make war ou the Bez. We desire to say to this gentlemen when he gets ready to make war on the editor of this piper to sup- ply himself with a sufficient a- munition. We shall convince Rev, Lee betore we get through with him that he posses mere gall then wrains. Begin as soon us possible, because nothing suits us better than when we are attacking an enemy. MR. Astwood is a “back number” now and needs rest. We have in this Country huodreds of colored young men of ability and good character, many of them having served their Country in war while Astwood was asleep under the shade of the Paim in his native tropical home, who are better fit- ted to represent us abroad than this alien. CHAS. R. DOUGLASS. —= MR.STEWARD DEFENDS HIS WIFE. the Bre: Dear Sir: I desire to state that I have nev- er been so much surprised, as I was by the false and foolish statement ot Will Furgerson in the last issue of the BEE; that I allowed him to take my wife to Irving Park. Why she was in Baltimore at the time and I am confident that wy wife would not so degrade herself as to go ten steps with a stranger. I was informed that one Will Fergu- son had meddled with my domes- tie affairs and I warned him not to repeat the offense. There was u0 threats, I generally act but never threaten. And it matters not what may have been published heretofore in any paper as coming trom me reflecting upon the char- acter of my wife, is false. Ido this in order to justice to her. We my have differed, but I would ve false to my self if I doubted her purity asa lady. 1 have always found her perfect in her moral qualities. In tact every one who has ever met her has praised her modest demeanor and there is no ove who can convince me after I have had four years of association with her aught else. She has her faults it is true but Lean defy the world to point out one spot upon her charac- ter. The “Evening Siar,” during the month of March most grossly mis represented my statement. If I uever had a mother-in-law al! would have been easy sailing, but 1 have a jim dandy in that respect. Mr. Fergnson highly flatters himself when he says I accased him or any one of taking my wife to an excursion. The whole truth is, that Ferguson got scared as all cowards do, and to save himselt rushed to the police headquarters. My wite is too well known for me to let such nonsen for a moment bother me. Fire at me all you want gents, [can fire back; but you can’t harm Mrs. Stewart and | like any other mauly man, states that the mau who dares to iusinu- ate agaiust One so near to me, can not live unless he is iron. Mrs. Stewart is too near the Zenith to be lessened in the opinion of auy one by any scheme that might be inaugurated. Her character is tvo well established. Sincerely, C. C. Stewart.
