IMPORTANT MEASURES RECOMMEND-~ ED —A COLORED BAPTIST THEOLOG- ICAL SCHOOL TO BE ORGANIZED, The Baptist Congress which sinated with the muinister’s con- ov Monday, Feb. 4, 1889, and fixed for Oct. 2d, 3d and 4th, held its sessions in theaudienceroom of the Metropolitan Baptist Charch, R St. bet. 12th and 13th Sts., no. w., from 10 a. m., on the 2d, to 10:10 p.m. ou the 4th. The officers were Rev. I. 5S. Robinson, president; Sandy Alexander, vice; RK. S. Laws, secre- tary; Wm. A. Creditt, assistant secretary, and Trustee Harrison Gordon, treasurer. The papers on University, Old People’s Home, a Baptist Journal, Unifivation of Charch Fellow-sbip and Home Mis- sious were all logically prepared, | read and discussed as the general | business | unanimously adopted as_ the basis of the Congress, and of racial interests. The Congress— the churches of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, and the Woman Baptist Home Mission, represented by Misses L. A. Rose, M.L. Jordan and Mrs. Lizzie Ganston. They ordained each Fifth Sanday in the year for the support of the Home, Education and Missions, and in order that the denomination may sustain an orgavized system of finance, it was ordained by that body that all monies herein after for such pur- poses shall be put into the Executive Board, which the Secre- tary shall acknowledge by quarter- ly circulars. The following resolu- tions, offered by R. 8S. Laws, were, atter able arguments in defense of the race, unanimously passed by the Congress: Whereas, at the recent elections in our newly admitted States in the West, the people gave sentiments expressive of the principles which imbody human freedom. There- fore be it Resolved, That we, the Baptist Congress, now assembled iu the Metropolitan Baptist Church, do hereby acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, in His guidance of our national elections. Be it further Resolved, That whereas, in the great fight now going on in Virgin- ia under the leadership of ex Sena~ tor Wm. Mahone, it requires the united forces of the party to sustain the princ’ ples of the cause; there- fore, we, the body above named, feel it to be our duty to give our prayers, labor and influence to se- cure the election of Hon. In union there is strength, Richasd Laws is stumping Vir- ginia for the republicans. Laws is aspeaker from way back. Colored men will be appointed on the Police foree and some will be appointed sergeants, Itis hoped that Major Moore will find it convenient to promote officer McNeal to u sergeant. He deserves it and is entitled to the promotion. Public Printer Palmer is next to Hon. John W. Noble to recog- nize the merits of colored appli- cants. We want to see a tew colored young ladies appointed in the Press Room of the Government Printing office.
