It was warm and clear, the thermometor reacb- ing summer heat at midday. All of the chareches were beautitully decorated with choice flowers caus- inga fragrance to permeate the edifices , that was charming to the eye as well as to the other senses. Rector Hutchings Bishop conduct ed the services at St. Phillips. The cbureh was crowded at the morning service, and the floral decorations showed the taste of the committee of ladies who, with the Rector’s es- timable wife, had charge of their arrangements. The offutory was liberal and the choir sustained their high reputation. At Bethel Dr. R. F. Hurly was assisted during the day by Bishop Wayman, and in the evening preached to the Mt. Calvary [Com- mandery. At Zion Dr. Waters preached to full houses day and evening, and preached a special sermon to —— commandery in the evening. The bright uniforms of the Sir Knights, with the floral decoratious of this chureb, were grand. At St. Marks, Dr. Monroe held his vast audience spellbound whilst he eloquently related the story of the Cross, and the exercises at the Lyceum in the aiternoon were of a highly literary character. & Dr. Wisher’s and Dr. Stevinson’s churebes were largely attesded. Mr. and Mrs. Unaries Thompson were at the Gilbert House last Friday and Saturday Newal O, Newman, who has been confined to bis home for two or three weeks, is on deck again. Great preparations are being made for the centennial celebration Odd Fellows, Masons, and G. A. R. Posts are arranging tu parade, and the regular republican organiza- tions, under Major Wm. Freeman, will parade and also entertain the M. S. Quay Clubs, of Philadelphia. Dr. Derrick will address these uni- formed bodies at the Casino on the evening of may 1st. Wash Parker, P. Barguet, Wm. Freeman, and Tom Brown are all stated for federal appointments during the coming summer. ‘xne annual reception of the society of the Sons of New York, onthe 25th, promises to eclipse anything of the kind ever held in New York. Dr. P. W. Raz was one of the pall bearers at the faneral of the late Peter Haydea, whose demise caused so much regret at bis home in Bos’on. He was honored in his life and in his funeral rites by the best citizens of his home and other states. Truly a good man has fall. en. Robt. F. McIntyre, democratic politician, has moved his family from Albany to this city, and now lives in the 28d Harlem District. He and F.C. Lawsou are already laying pipe for election as delegat- esto the next democratic state convention. They have the cour- age of their convictions, and are admired for their pueh and energy for what they think. HOW GREAT BRITAIN’S SHIP- BUILDING POLICY COMPAR. ES WITH OURS. American Economist. THE AGGREGATE of money subsidies paid by Great Britain to her merchant fleet from 1848 to 1882, inclusive, was $161,261,900. This persistent payment of anuual subsidies to steamship lines ranged from $3,180,000 to $6,107,761. Their annual subsidies aided by Eng- laud’s persistent protection of her iron and steel manufacture from 1790 to 1842, and our neglect to protect ours from 1790 to 1860, and our repeal of discrimiuating duties in 1818, and of navigation restric- tions 30 years later, drove all trans- atlantic American steamship iines off the ocean. The result has beeu that the imports and exports of the Tnited States, in 34 years, in Am- tican ships, have been $11,320,- $.2,203, commencing in 1848 with $238,300,163 and encing in 1882 with 242,850,815, an increase of $4,550,652,or 1 9-10 per cent. For a great many years Doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local reme- dies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pro- nounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitution- al disease, and therefore requires conctitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Care, manotactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally iu doses from 10 drops to a teaspoon- ful. Every availa- ble place in the hall was filled. Miss Julia Wormley recited a humorous selection entitled how’ girls fish which was heartily applauded. The Franz_Abt orchestra fairly out. did itself and came in for no small share of the applause bestowed upon the poor BrokenHearted Olub. Col. Geo. M.Arnolds’ Irish was slightly defec- tive and it was particularly notice- able during his rendition of Nora O’neale; there was an absenceof the rich greasy brogrew so peculiar to the inhabitants of Kerry Tipperany and Cork.
