TEMPERANCE MASS-MEET- ING A Temperance Mas-(?)meeting under the auspiccs of the Women’s Christian Temperance Uuion was held at the 19th Street Baptist Church Sunday January 8, at 3 p. m. ‘lhe meeting was quite inter- esting notwiths anding the com- paratively small attendance, Why were not the seats of that edifice filled with anxious enquir- ers to witness these exercises and to listen to the car-fully and thoughtfull paper on Temperance by Mrs. Margaret Weaver, Super- intendent of the legislative work of the W. C. T. U,, and the ab'e and pracwble addre-ses by R-v. Dr. Sieward, Rev. Moore and Dr. C.N. Whiinsy. The temperance question is one that ahould engage the attention of every lover of hu mavily Dr. Steward in his addre-s remarked that hedid not think that any church was in favor of whisky, but it isa fact that a large per cent of the membership of our chu ches driuk wiue, beer und something stronger. He spoke alsovf the necessity of thechurch being worked up to this matter of tem- perance and to be made co see the terrible evil in all of its ghastly phases; thus she would be arcused to vigilant aud active work. He further says that God has placed this question before us to settle and that is only a question of time and the victory is ours. Zior Baptist church, Rev. John Jasper pastor. Mr. E. Archer, one of the coun- cilman of Jackson Ward, was very badly assaulted bya man named Spratley. It seems that Spratley had been renting some rooms from Archer and moved owing him (Archer) for rent and upon being required to leave some of his furniture as an indemnity he became enraged and dealt Mr. Archer several severe blows in the face with a hammer. Miss Ellen Simms a neice of Mr. William Lyons, one of our most prominent citizens, has been very ill but is now rapidly im- proving.
