MAJOR WALKER’S REPORT TO THE DISTRICT COM- MISSIONERS. WHAT THE MAJOR HAS DONE. PROVEMENT, CHANGES &C. PILICEMEN WANTED, Major Samuel H. Walker, Su- riutendent of the Metropolitan Police Force has sulmitted his report to the District Commission- ners. Major Walker says: Having but recently assumed tie control of the Police Department, I have not been able to closely scrutinize the work accomplished by i's members during the past fiscal year, and shall not endeavor to comment upon it, but will give place in this report to the statis tics for that period as shown by the records in the ofiice of the property clerk. ~In speaking o1 ORIME, the Major says: Last year and year betore there was appropriat: d for the special service in the pre- vention and detection of cr nie, $1.920. This is the only meats at the disposition of the depar - ment for the employment of spe. If Con- gress would graut $5000 yearly for this branch of the service it would not bean extravagant a- mount. One-half of the appro- priation made for extra police purposes at the Capitol every four years would enable the department to have a creditabie detective corps, and far more good accom- plished. THE PENSION FUND. Many on the Force who have been detailed at the Police Court as witnessess during the time al- lotted them for rest, men who have consumed their private hours on public duty, those who have been patrolling tor years unusually large beats, are broken do vn un- der the burden they have had to carry, and there is a score of them to day who would like to be, and who should be retired from sevice and pensioned, would the fund permit of such a course. Congre+ should grant an increase of 100 men. That number would en bie the placing on duty at ove time, 187 men. Such action is uecessa- ry for the required labor to bi performed.
