WAITING CONDEMNED. GO SOUTH OR WEST. The cry “go west” has long since been heralded over the con- fines of the United States and, no doubt, it has been looked upon as a subject of langbter, sport and even ridicule. Go north, if you are south, where as long as you can trace some man’s dining room, as long as you stand behind some man’s chair at table, and in fact, where the highest aspirations is to be a waiter and tobe a head waiter is more preferable thar Mr. Cleveland’s position, there and then I say, in the langnage of our “northern friends,” there is no discrimination. No, there is no discrimination, for if you are a waiter you are respected as such which standing holds the propor- tion there as school teacher (pub lic) in the south. A main difference in the two sec- tions is this: Here they are willing generally to take acolored man’s money anywhere, there they are not. Even some of our Washing- ton friends, when in company and perhaps elsewhere, often confront you with, “We are Northerners.” Let me advise you not to say it anymore for it does not bring any honor upon you. While waiting is the most com- mou occupation in the North and is far from being the highest occupa- tion in intelligent estimation, yet as a meanstoa high aim and end, it can and should be endured. It is complimentary to say that the waiters of color, have not toa great extent, sought occupation in the South. Southern friends need not hasten north to become a husband ora wife. Southern friends, who are led on by northern attractions, will get Old Medford and a hus- band or Old Medford and a wife, while my northern friends may, in going south to marry, get a hus- band and little ram, but southern wives will be as far from it as the noon days sun is from the obstruc- tions of the Western horizon. If, then, northerners wed nortb- erners and southerners wed south- erners, southerners waiting will probably be kept in one section ot the country and that two in that section which boasts of being the cradle of civilized inhabitants, the foundation and “‘cap_ stone” of the learned world of Uuited States ot America. When Milton said “’Tis better to reign iu hell than serve in heav- en,” he is questioned, but, who can question ‘Tis better to reign in the south or west than serve iu the north. Our northern friends boast of their smart and learned men. Yes, it is true and noargument can overcome it, but are they not all white men ? My friends, cast aside your wh te aprons, cease to sail through some dining room, w.th your trays cle- vated on one haud, for five cents or a quarter and often for nothing, seek a higher ocev pati n, if there are too mavy Smart men in Massa- chusettes and other northern states, leave then and go south or west or any where else even it be the isles ofthe sea, have respect for your selves and your race.
