————— OOOO TUIRTY-NINTH YEAR TO THE FRONT FOR HORACE! per BYERY MAN PUT HIS SHOUL- DER 10 THE WHEEL, - fhe Mochester Convention Review of the Vicliafierthe Battle What the Proceed+ jos Meant-A Broad Hint tothe Liberals, Rocursren, May 17.—A few facts in re- J to the Democratic Convention which closed lu labors here yesterday, and a few inferences which naturally flow from those facts, are wor- thy of considorati ‘Thorw is HO reason why the sentiments.of the ooratio Convention of New York should be wre favorable to the platform of the Cin- tinnaté Convention and its nominees than will bo the sentiment of the Democrat- fo Conventions of the other Northorn States, On tho contrary, there are somo reasons why the New York Democracy would be more apt to hold back from the acceptance of the doings at Cincinnatl than would the Democ= rwy of the other Northern States. For moro tan thirty yours Mr. Greeley has conducted a Jending Journal in New York in opposition to the Domnveratl ty. He has therefore been fn confilet with the New York Democracy for a third of a century, throughout the whole of Which they have felt his heavy blows rif! CURMENT OF DEMOCRATIC OPINION, Now, whoever mingled among the delegates and oulsiders recently assembled here must have been stone blind not to see that the cur- rent of opinion set steadily and strongly in favor of ratifying the Cincinnati candidaves at the Baltimn ation, subject only to the con- dition that there should seem to be strength enough tn the Cineinnatt movement to make the ratitication of Greeley and Brown by the Demo- oratio National Convention a complete success In Novoraber, ‘There was not a solitary sign ex- hivited here from Tuesday morning onward which did not point unmistakably in that di- rection, All the Democrats saw It, and the Grant Republicans admitted It. Many of both clases wore surprised ut this unanimity of opin- lon, and were hardly prepared to witness it; but this did not make it any the less @ stern reality. THe DELINERATE ACTION OF THE CONVENTION, The majority of the Convention were undoubt- @ily on Wednesday in favor of the adoption of aresolution that should, In moderate but un- tquivecal terms, express the opinion that the Baltimore Convention onght to adopt the Cin= tinnati nominees? and if such a resolution had beon presented by some delegate from one of the interior counties, prefaced by an adrolt spoeoh, it would certainly have been adopted. But cooler and longer heads doubted the ex- cy of such an explicit expression of just at this time; and by referring tvorything relating to the platform to the Com- nittee on Resolutions, they Gnally prevailed in securing the unanimous adoption of a resolu- tion whteb, by Implication, uttered what It was deomod unwise to say in express Lerma, THE BALTIMORE DELEGATION A UNIT. ‘The sentiment of the Convention on this sub- Jot was shown also in the mode adopted for se- jecting delegates to the National Convention, tnd in the sort of me. appointed as delegates. After a long and heated discussion, the Conven- tion voted down a proposition which, by chanoe, aight have resulted in sending a divided delega- Won to Baltinore. ‘Phe advocates of this propo- Htion presented {tin the most adroit form, and through @ misunderstanding of its ultimate of fects secured tor it the votes of @ lange number of the warm friends of Mr. Greeley. It origi- with two or three delegates who were posed to Greeley: and, aside from those who voted for It undera misopprehension, It was sus tained by Its orlginators, and by a few others who did not ree any way but thls fe ring thelr own appointment to HB itimore. The failure of the proposition is understood to have provented ui tion to Baltimore of three opponents of Greoley and Brown, viz.: Mr. Reoves, member of Uoncres¢ from Suffolk; Mr. Beebe of Sullivan, ai ir. Choosbro of Ontario, The committee having this matter In charge 4s sald to have seu from the list the name of Mr. Checabro even after he had been recommended by the 1 6 from bi al district, and to t poli? in his sted Col, Faulkner of Livingston, a momber of Goy. Hoffman's staff. WHAT 18 SEHTLED, Tie ed to have no discordont elements among them, By a tesolution of the Convention they are Instructed ty voto as @ unit on all questions, including nom- Inationa. Itmay therefore be regarded ox set- ted thut if between now and July the Liberal Re- publicans shall develop sufficient strength to ant. aly the New York deb tes that the election an be carried by the combined opposition, then Greeley and Brown will get the entire vote of Now York at Baltimore, And on the o'hor hand, It is Just about ws certain that If the New V ork delegates are not reasonnbly sure of that fol then they will not vote for Greeley and Brown thos stend the New York Democracy. Can ‘1 ty ny 6 d reason for supposing that Nhe Domoe of the othor No ruhera Btates di )Locoupy substantia'ly the same position? SURETY OF DIL GLE Lex's PRIEN DS, whole matter, therefore, rests with the Lica Republicans, If they move forward wil vigor between now and July, and show t th ntry that they are a power, th sith more will help them out. If they lie still, and i rnothing to exhibit their strength, th Linore will let them alone, “Phe Lil emis may roly upon ity? ald a distingulshe Democratic leader to me yesterday, * that if th bn atx I ot to throw away thelr th millions of votes, they will prefer to bes tien upon straighi-out candidates of own Such are some of the lessons tau “ A Letter from jlon. chonante Min to w pithe Conteder OAL Lincoln, , biter of The sun Sis: In this morning's SUN you copy an editorial from the Mobile Register under these John Forsyth Boumer hate Virtirestte Mum whaten in Forsyth, Bue aud Com- ernment Head Ines: "Tie Hon ate Te v3 erit or demerit that article contains Tam not wonsible, It was written in Mobile and Lam If my opinions are worth anything to the pub: Ho. they are worth a correct statement, Bet Knows then that Phaye not caught the white Nat inf ui, ahd always have been | Democrat nnd always expect to be al vrata at and historic party wh tru ! jor T am, remains truc and faithful tot itution of what once w and, Ty w my country n are reclpr dutien and cannot exist without the ot C 1 h disabilities by statutes made I 1 of the terms of mit itary surrender a power that ac eopted that surret ‘ 1 by haw from holding the poorest Meo underd it, be. cause at one Line that Govern thomghtay Worthy to fll one of Its fist-elask misstons toa foreign State, while the literate 1 \ biweks my bor je, is eligible to the Presidency, F knoy what should be my country only by its dicfran ehixements und the persecutions of my people The shamrock of my free citizenship te forbid den by Hadical law to grow for me on my nativ soil, and Lam ae one bereft of fag and country And it ia because L yearn fora country that wil do me jurtive and permitto me the rarest o luxutiog the Lixury of patrlotism=that 1 take und stands behind my hale a @ deep Interest in watehing the politheal ek Boots that are now in active upheaval through mitt vitry All tuat L see warns ine to stand by the ont party uu unury (hat has never strayed frou PRICE TWO CENTS.
