These diversitics break out in the debates of Congress andof State Legislatures, in the messages of ( nore and the resolutions of Conventions, through the colamus of pub lic journals and the specches of private in- dividuals, The opinions of the Western De- mocracy, for example, ate decidedly opposed 10 those of the Eastern in regard to the proper mode of reducing the national debt and en- larging the volume of the currency; while, on the other hand, the Western Republicans difllr from the Eastern quite as seriously on free trade and a high protective tariff. In- dood, the Western leaders of both partics are more in accord with one another on financial and commercial subjects, than with distin- guished members of their respective organi cations on this side of the Alleghanies, Bo, too, we fiud antagonistic opinions tween the North aud the South on recou- struction, the validity of the so-called carpet: bag governments, the permauency of the Fifteeuth Ameudment, and the admission of the whole body of the late rebels to the right to vote and hold office. If we are to trast the most solemn declarations of the leaders of those peculiar elements below the Poto- mae and the Ohio, upon which the De mocracy must rely for a party in that section of the Union, they intend to accept in good faith the whole eeries of reconstruction measures, On the other hand, magnates of the Northern Democracy seem ready to stake the triumph of the party on the success of a fierce crusade against these measures, New, though these four factions have rome points of agreement, they exhibit #0 many more of antagonism that it seems hardly possible to preserve old party orgaui- vations intact after the pressure exercised by the great exigencies of the last dozen years is removed. There is, therefore, a serious proba- bility that we may see four formidable can- didates in the field for the next Presidency, instead of only two. Our history records several occasions of this sort. ‘The most conspicuous was in 1824, at the general dissolution of old parties near the close of Moxnos’s Administration, an epoch, by the by, very similar to the present. Five candidates entered the lists— Jackson, Apams, Crawronp, CLay, aud Canuoen. ‘The last named soon retired, leay- Ing the other four to contend for the prize CRAWFORD was the regular Democratic ean. didate, ADAMS represented the poliey and the wishes of Moxnonr, Jackson reflected the passions and the enthusiasm of the West, while CLay, who had long been the eloquent advocate in Congress of @ protective tariff and internal improvements, relicd upon his personal popflarity. Phe result of the straggle is instructive Vhe caucus candidate of the Democracy was beaten for the first time in twenty-four years, CRAWFORD receiving only 41 vous Chay got bat 87, while Jackson obtainadl 00, and Apams 4. Th being no choice by the Presidential Electors, the names of the three highest candidates were sent to the House of Repreeentatives, when Abas, through the rid of Cray, was chosen, thus giving oc rasion for a ery of bargain and corruption against those eminent etate n that rang through the Iand for a dozen yeare afterward, Tho Next Pr For all substantial purposes, Chawronp ad ADAMS were the regular candidates of the two parties; yet the large majority of the peopla Because theancient régime in each party had lost its prestige; and Hy, be issues out of whieh the war with England in 1812, ond on which the two parties had been divided, lad passed away, and the peoy le erate far. ther couter reorg more espee cause the sprang ald not ut them, but der rties, and th then ma anded a ization of 1 considera. tion ot eottloment the new questions rising for Is not the nation just cuteriug upon a state of affiirs anvlogous to that which marked the Jackson and ApaMs epoch? Why thould the people of required to go up t levy their taxes ¢ manage thelr own alfairs ? New York be Albany for authority to Don't they know how much money they ought to spe deficient in common senso that they tll how many policemen, f) Gus men, National clerks, janitors, and other pablie functionaries they noed, and how much they t to pay for their services ? We protest inst this entire system of referring to Albany what is exclusively our Dasinese: It introduces a inighty and most dangerous element of corruption jute the the State, It loads to log rolling, and deep. ens and extends the that easily infuses iteelf into our leg elatton, onght to be abolished. Are they eo | of money they will raise by taxation, andito what purposes they will devote it. Th 0) will undertake to choose city officerd who!|/* © will do their work intelligently andhonestly ; and if it is not so done, we shall know who is responsible. At present it is impossible to tell by whom the amount of our taxes is really determined, and it is impossible accord- ingly to correct any extravagance and dis- honesty at the next election. We understand that Mr. Pater B, SWEENY, by whom the Government of the State is now carried on, is opposed to the reform we ad- vocate. Of course he is, He now has a power in his honds that he might not retain if the citizens of New York were allowed to con- trol their own taxation, Ife does not thin! the people can be trusted to govern them. selves, And ho enlls himself a Democrat | sama ieatan Porter Dodgin: Admiral Porton, writing in the name of Sceretary Ronrsow, informs the President, aud the President informs the House of Re- presentatives, “that no appropriations for the Navy Department have been diverted to the survey of the Isthmus of Darien.” He soys, what is truc, that there was an appro: priation of $40,000 made for the purpose by the act of July 28, 1866; but be disingenu- ously omits to add that this appropriation was specifically ordered to be expended under the dircetion of the War Department. For Admiral Porter to seize upon it, is a pleco of impudent lawlessness which Congress ought to severely rebuke. As to the President, his ignorauce of the law in the first instance may perhaps be ex. ensed ; but now that his attention has been directed to the matter, he will shamefully neglect his duty If he does not at onco cail PorteER to account. Let us ece whether the promise he made in his message to strine gently enforce the laws will be kept in this case. The Lost Children of Wynockic. Joseru Wynne lives ia the mountains near Wynockie, Passaic county, N. J. His hut is accessible only through a lonely moun tain path. It contains but one room beside a loft, in which his five children slept Wn e ekes out a miserable existence by cut- ting hoop-poles on the mountains, On New Year's day three of his children disap- peared, The oldest of these children was ten, and the youngest six. All were boys. According to their mother's story, the chil- dren went from home at halftpast three o'clock in the afternoon to gather white wal- nuts within a Lalf mile of the cabin. Thre quarters of an hour afterward Mrs. WynLe says she became alarmed because they had not returned. She ran Into the woods and called them, but in vain. Wynit returned home atdusk., It was raining hard. He lighted his lantern and searched through the forest, shouting until he was hoarse, but receive no answer. Then the assistance of tl neighbors was invoked, and the long, dark, dreary night was spent in an ineffectual search for the missing boys. On Tuesday a reporter of Tite SUN spent honry in a fruitless attempt to procure a guide to Wyotr’s cabin, No resident of Wynockie dared to accompany him, This fact of liself throws a deeper shade of suspicion over the mystery, It should stimulate the county authorities tow renewed exertion to learn the fate of these innocents.
