Bpcoiat Desvaten to The Sun, Wasnixoton, Sept. 3.—The cable telegrams Which reported the discovery of a mutiny on the Sal that seven of the mutincers were hanged was un- true, The frigate Sabiue has been ordered home fon account of this mutinous conspiracy among her crew Three witnesses, sent by another vessel to avoid deing These facts lave leaked out at the Navy Depart- ment to-day @ at Cherbourg were true, The statement mpered with, have arrived in Boston ‘The Sabine was on @ Cincy cruise with the gradu Ating class of midshipmen, some sixty odd in num in G, Walker, & aephew of Senator James W. The above despatch from Tnx Sux'a Washing ton correspondent ts a partial corroboration of an Associated Press despatch which was sent from Paris on Monday, Aug ‘That dexpateh asserted that a desperate conspirary had been discovered on the Sabine, then tying in the port of Cherbourg. It stated that some of the erew, to revenge themaeives on the officers, attempt ed to eet fre to the powder magazine, and to blow up the ship, Tt also averred that the conspirators had proceeded so far in their designs ay to light a fuse communicating with the magazine. The plot ‘was frustrated by acabin boy, who discovered the Durning fuse and pat itout, An Investigation was made, and the mutineers were arrested. The de Spaich further anid that twenty-two sailors were im: Plicated in the plot, and they were placed in As printed in THe Sum, the despatch concluded thus: “Seven have been condemned to death, and to be hanged at the yardarm.” The other New York papers, receiving the same despatch, printed it: © Seven men have been condemned to death, and hanged at the yardarm.”* On Tuesday, August 9, the Navy Department at Washington telegraphed that no oMcial information fn reference to the mutiny and execution had been received. 1 ptly telegrapued to Paris, through the Associated Pross, for further informa tion, but received no reply on that day Tt was not until Wednesday, August 31, that the report was denied. On Thursday a Paris despatch Was printed in all the papers, contradicting the ‘whole story in the following hazy dispateh : Panis, Aug. 31 A note from the American Lege contradicts the report which prevailed here o Gunday, that & dangerous conspiracy had been di covered on board the frigate Sabine, and announces the story uttorly withont foundation, Wo aro not informed concerning to ‘the author of this note from the Americin Legation, It was cer- tainly not Minister Washburne, for he was in Ger- many Tie dewpatch of August 29 asserted positive: ly that a desperate conspiracy had been discovered, ‘While the telegram of the Sint speaks of it as a report which prevailed in Paris on Sunday. Wo judge that the main points of the first despatch wore true, The despatch was printed wrong in every journal but Tix Bo, which asserted that the men were “to be banged,” and not * were hanged,” + ‘The frat despatch says that the crew wished to re Yenge themselves upon the officers, What the off cers did to provoke this terrible revenge is unknown. An the vessel was on a ploasure excursion, It Is pos sible that the cabins and other portions of the ship bad been enlarged and rested to give the officers plenty of room for enjoyment, as was the case on the Tallapoosa, the men being crowded to the wall for Accommodations. ‘The records of the Navy show that twenty-seven years have elapsed since a mutiny of any magnitude took place on board a United States vessel, In 412 the United States brig Somers, Commander Macken iv, sailed from New York’ with despatches for the const of Africa, On the voyage home, and when near St, Thomas, it was discovered tuat Mid Bhipman Spencer, a son of the then Secretary of War, with about twenty of the seamen, had forined ® plan to seize the vessel and cou Vert her into a pirate, Several arrests were mad fn investi vation was held, and the seamen and th midshipman were executed. ‘The case caused a pro found exeltement st home, and a Court of Inquiry was organized, the Commander was tried. and his action fustiflod. An attempt was subsequently mate to indict im for murder, but the Judge charged the jury that It was not competent for a civil tribunal to take up a tase pending before a Naval Court. ~~ THE POLITICAL CIRCUS, — The Debating Kepublicnns. Correspondence of The Bun, Purworrn, 945 A. M.—The last faint glimmer of hope is extinguished. The two hundred end three souls upon whose fate for the last three days reated the eyes of the whole country, have met their fearful doom, far away from all haman succor in the depths of the earth, among the marrow camse- ways ofapolsonons pit, The sixth body has just been brought ap. It is that of Matthew Bvana, of the Steuben Colliery, His hands are firmly clenched, his eyes almort ont of their sockets, How different the scene to-day from that of yesterday! Gloom, indeed horror, = pictured on every face. ‘The sobs of the broken-hearted wives, the cries of the sonw and daughters, the tears of the parents, and the sore row of the friends touch hearts that have never been touched before, THe SHAFT OF HROTIT. We arrived at the acene of the calamity at SP M vesterday, The cara from Seranton in which we came were jammed 10 suffocation, We took our position on the railrowd tractonlyk thirty feet from the lower tunnel, by which the shart le approached, aud viewed the # nes A steep, Ueular hill-side, thekly clustered with A the ruins of the coal breaker, One bundred feet from the summit of the hill, and on the other «ido of w narrow road stood tio walls, t talus of the al breaker, nc of the ming—a well four gray 6 7 feet injextent, called che shat. ‘To the right of these rulns wasa terrace, where only miners were allowed, and where 1s worked the derrick, Then there was a perpencicular wall extenain downwards forty (ect to a wide road, Here inthe mouth of a tu that connects with the sha't, af ter running in fifty tect. 1b was (lirough this tunnel that the miners entered the shaft, and the dead bodies were brought out ‘The mouth of this tunnel had choked up with the burning covls and debris from the “cracker,” but had been opened sufficiently to admit a man's body. The buroing coals at the entrance of this tun nel, scorched all thowe that attempted to enter. It fe still burning, and will burn for the next three weeks, ‘These burning coals formed a pyramid. twenty fect high, extending downward until it was only afew fect from the railroad track, THR MURDEROUS FAN, Going for the lower road, we were allowed by the police, after much diMculty, to go inside the rope which marked the limit betweon the populace and the miners. As nothing of Importance was being done here, we made the ascent to the first terrace, and inspected the workings of the fan, which siace 6 o'clock in the morning had been throwing fresh air down the shaft. ‘This was done despite the wishes of many men, who, if not miners, were blessed with a degree of common senso. ‘They were for drawing the foul air out instead of forcing the re air down. For it stood to reason that the ir which was fanned down bad no other effect than to drive the foul air into the chambers and gangways “where the 200 miners were supposed to have taken refuge, ult whieh could not but prove fatal, But, no! the experienced miners—men, in the main, without judgment, and on this oceasion laboring under great excitement—very contemptuously din- dained any suggestions ofiered them, and continued to fan on for twenty-four hours. AD MANAGEMENT ON ALL MANDS, We do not desire to impugn the motives that Prompted them in this course, for one and ail worked zealously, hoping to save thetr brethren, But none would acknowledge a superior. All want- cd to be generals, Boisterous confusion and excite- ment prevailed from first until last, ‘The talkers were in the majority, and knew a great deal more ndy clae, ‘They scorned to yield any of to the better Judgment and experience of the less demonstrative, ‘The result was that ta few who wero disposed to do the working, be. cane disgusted with the mismanagement of things, and took their departure AN ANNOYING om. Another source of disturbance was from the po: lice, which was composed of those miners who were dly to go down the shaft, Once installed as policemen, they assumed despotic and tyrannical powers. All liquor stores were closed by their or- ders. No one was allowed to enter the mines, and the whole district was placed by themselves under their own control, For arrogance, impudence, and uncouthnoss, these temporary custodians of the pub- le peace caunot fnd ther equals, too co} THK DESCKNT INTO THK MINES One word with respet to the descents into the mine, Reports from the seene of the disaster re- present that those who made the descents have penetrated the gangwa)s in different directions for distances of seventy-five fect, Such storics are sheer nonsense, It may be remembered that those who wore the Grst to desecnd the shaft were found dead at the bottom, and 80 brought to the surface, ‘This circumstance hal the effect of intimidating all the other miners, slowing them the great peril of entering the pit, Wo passed six hours in the tun. nel, and closely serutiz zed the men who made each descent up to So'clock yesterday morning, and ob- served that as they took their positions previous to Starting, the cold sweat of fear stood upon their pallid faces, We watched them until they reached pottom of the pit, when they slowly went out of into the traverses, two, however, remaining behind. Tae others were out of sight but « few minutes, and then came back, and on signal 1 were drawa to the surf when they fainted, and were taken into open alr, and by rubbing and applications of cold water restored to consciousness. THE FIRST BODIES RECOVERED, At aa few minutes after 3 o'clock yesterday morn: i four truly brave men went down aod disappear: ed in the tunnel, They were absent for twenty minutes, when they wet seen dragging the bodice oftwomen, They signalled, and all were drawn up, Atthis time everything was etill; suddenly, how: ever, wien the bodies were takes into the open air, there was fa great rush of the people to see the corpses, THE GHASTLY CORPSES, Tho police vainly endeavored yo repress the throug which was #0 eager to look upon the dead men, And they weren horrible sight: bloated, dis colored, and out of atl human shape, eo that they could be recognized only by their clothing and little articles in thelr poekets, One was a young 1 about 90 years of age, Whose name was ascertained to be Palmer Steele, a mule feeder, as stated in this morning's wx. ‘The other was a middle-aged man, not yet recognized, TUM GATHERING OF THR WIVES AND CHILDREN Notwithstanding all the measures taken by the Committeo of Miners to keep back the Intelligence of the recovery of these bodies, it was not long before the women and children of the minsing men crowded around with iamentations and groans, tearing their hair, and weeping bitterly, It was a scene to wring a heart of a stone, THE BREAKING OF THB INFERNAL FAN AtS o'clock the belting of the fan engine broke und the injection of air Into the pit consequently ceased, ‘This had the effect of forcing the adoption ofa different course; and from that time t eruptions of smoke and fleme from the mouth of the pit gradually ceased, It was probably owing to this that the bodies were taken out so soon afterward. Had the current forced dowaward been stopped twelve hours earlier the same resalt would have been accomplished so much sooner, DISCOVERY OF DINNRK CANS AND CUPS, AtG:IS A. M., G.
