The preliminary operations which remilted to the brilliant victories in the Shevandoah Valiey commenced during the latter part of last week, by & reconnoissance under Genera! Getty, in the direc- tion of the Opequan, On Friday the enemy were found to have fallen back in the direction of Win- chester, presenting # weak line upon our right wing. This opening was promptly taken advantage ef, and on Sunday Genera! Averili's cavalry attacked end drove the rebel Genera!) Gordon's division of infantry from Martinsburg. General Early mani- fested @ disposition to advance in fi rve to sustain Gordon, when General Sheridan determined to fall upon bis rear, in the direction of Herryville, Tho entire army was placed ,in marching order on Sun- dey night, and before daylight on Monday morn- ing the Nineteenth end Sixth corps advanced, followed by General Crook's command a few bourses later. The infantry moved on the centre, supported by cavalry on the left and right tanks About four o'clock o splendid infantry charge was made by the Army of West Virginia uncer ' General Crook, The enemy were pushed buck fromthe First, but retired in comparatively good order, until our cavalry under General Torbert, coming down on the enemy's right, struck their flank a mile or two north of Winchester, and drove tt completely off the turnpike, with the loss of sev- eral bundred prisoners. The cavalry uncer Gen- eral Averill now joined inthe battle, and about dark the route was completa, The fled at all points, hurrving through W hester un cover of the darkness, and pressed by our cav- elry, At night our troops rested Our losses im this engagement et from three to four thousand, Tb very lost more than twice that number. In this engagement all arms—ertillery, infantry aud cavalry wore equally engaged, The enemy fought with grea courage and desperation, The cavalry made ofthe finest charges in the war, In no case did the rebel cavalry venture to vroes sabres At one time General Torbert chased them a distance of eight miles, The infantry, of course, offered the most serious opposition. A splendid charge of General Custer’s and Lowell's brigades a little be- fore\dusk resulted in the capture of tnree guns, nine gtands of colors and eight hundred men, including @izty officers. Three thousand rebe] wounded were found in Winchester, and their dead and wounded lined every road and field.
