THE NEW YORK SUN, EE MONDAY MORNING, APRIL 15, 1861. ‘Tan Confederate Traitors have commenced the war they have been 10 long preparing for without obstruction, and their first prize in fight (having previously confined themselves to stealing, under pretence of perce) has been the Capture of Fort Sumter and dixty mon, by a force of five thousand, with ninetesn heavy batteries, This inglerious success will cost them dear. Inexcusably and wantonly taking ap the offensive, they have at once cut them selves off from all honest sympathy, even in the South, and kindled « patriotic rage that envelopes all parties and all classes through- out the Union States henceforth. The Presi- dent has issued his proclametion, calling out 75.000 men to put down the rebollion, and con- vening Congress on the Four h of July. Gov eenor Moraas, of this state, will at once call out a contingent of 25.0¢0 men, and Governor COvnrm, of Pennsylvania, will do the same. Now regiments are already forming rapidly, in anticipation of the proclamation, ‘Tre bombardment of Fort Sumter, is cer. tainly a battle by itself, and the whole affair a transaction without « parallel, Except the glorious carcer of Axpensom in Charlestun fharbor, now sadly but to him honorably ter- ‘minated, we need not remark that we have no single point of eatisfaction to dwell upon as American citizens. The whole conduct of af- fairs at that point on the part of the United States, ia one tissue of unmitigated mortif- cation and disgrace, As if it were not enough for us to smart under the pity of the world and the humilistioa of our own reflee tions, we must be subjected to the scorn of perjured traitors, who if they neither trath nor honor nor love of country, have mettle, audacity and force of arm, to ro- deem even them from pure contempt. To think that a petty state, inferior to ene of our considerable towns, revolted for purposes that poor humanity itself ab- hore, has advanced in three months to swol- lon and met acing success, with swift and un- checked stride, conquering and to conquer, over the dishonored constitution and laws, the cowed Government and the overpowered forees of the cace glorious and great American Bepublic! ‘To think of five thousand ‘‘confeierate” felens, without ome gun, or shet, or ounce of powder, swhiok they had net stolen with treachery and violence from the United States in time of pre- found posce, deliberately getting ready nine- toon tremendous batteries of our own bost guns, and pouring a forty hours storm of shot and shell upon a faithfal United S:ates officer and sixty men, while a United States fleet loaded down with amd and sea artil- tery, lay quietly im the ofl ig, looking on at ‘the horrid battue! Every true American heart Is this day sick with shame, It would be a premature judgment to censure unconditionally, at present advicer, the con- duct of the officers of the expedition, whose cool inaction in gight of his desperate ex- tremity, told upon the noble hearted Arpra Gon more heavily than all the uns of the ene my, and forced even the bold oatlaws whe be leaguered him, to send cheers of admiring sym- pethy mingled with their shot, and to vent curees end groans for the pusillanimity of the comrades who should have succored him or fallen with him toa man. We cannot help thinking there was an opportunity for an act of desing heroism, which might or might not fesve been successful, but which the world would have admired forever. Instead of this, it is the impression from present appearances, that wheever held the responsibillt y at sea on ‘Satarday, bas earned perhaps the reputation of “ a discreet and prutent officer.” The singu- lar description, ‘a bloodless victory,” which the confederates are enabled to apply to this effair, is a scathing sarcasm upon the effi clancy of our boasted ‘relief fleet.'’ If is safe enough to say there is blame and disgrace resting somewhere. If the force was #0 emall that any attempt to raise the siege would have been sheer madness, why was it gent, with notice two or three days ahead of ita arrival, of the intention to provision the fort pesceably, or failing that, to re enforce it by arms? Either the Goveroment or its offi- cers appear to have mado an imbecile botch of it. Wecan only hops, that official dispatchas may show that efficient proparations and eoldier-like purposes were thwarted by tho elements or other causes beyond human fore- sight or control, The feeling of the confederates themselves on the subject, ought to bea lesson—if a les- son could be of any use—to those who think mild caution the right way to deal with treason ‘and meet insurrectionary war. Major An- Denson is almost as popular for his stern fidel- ity, among the enemy as among b's loyal coun- trymen, ‘The imbecitity and cowardice, on the other hand, which the administration of ‘the government has heretofore suffered to be Imputed to it without contradiction, excite only contempt and cruelty instead of kind eon- sideration, among the assassins with whom it temporizes. If this Govoramont had made it- golf respected and feared, it woul bave beon Obeyed—or at losst, not bearded, insulted, whandered defied and trampled in the dust, by @ handful of braggarts, Virginia herself will stand by the Union, if at all, mot as her conyentionists threatem, en condition of ite @urreader, but on condition that it makos itself Bat thore will be no more temporizing. Ths Tolood is up, and both sides kaow that there can be no quarter. Thenation was awakened by the guas of the twelfth of April, and will etaid uo more nonsense at Wash'ngton, Prior to Friday last, there were two parties, but ne two parties can now be found, ‘Ihis the Coa- foderates know snd anticipate, and thereforo even though it were not true, their own des porate advance will soon make it #0, Presl- dent Liscon will have te fight for the capi tal, unless he has fifty thoneand ‘peace -mak- ore” in resolute bands and ready for its defence, within a few days. Pickens will follow the Tate of Sumter, if not speetily re inforced. Without an effective blockade of the rebel ports, the military and even naval armament of the Groat Conspiracy will be rapidly raised Our Army and Navy Reporter gives the fol- lowing as the military viow of the aul ©» Beturday waval awd mm lite y «fo SP Mies enh coxnam need, “ we v0 = earn the sarrender of Yor M mover ti Seewbeeetrt ghus uforetng Mejor Awures sn oe ives, op aad task Wado the tas Ny vase fo men nk rts eo eur which was inteoded ent THE LATEST NEWS.
