By R. R. Batson. There has been warm controversy in the financial district over the future of the oil industry. There have been many—and these included officials of large companics—who insisted in the belief that crudé ofl production should be further reduced through the me- to put the industry on a firmer basis. But in other quarters reduction in output has been decried as unneces- sary, and proponents of this view are having thelr Judgment borne out. When Mid-Continent crude oil was recently cut to $1.26 a barrel, and oil in other flelds was reduced in propor- tion, claims were made that the re- duction was forced by the larger com: panies for the purpose of making easier their acquisition of crude oll supplies, and in order to deplete the alue of properties so that it would be possible to obtain contro! of prom- ising territory at a relatively low cost. ‘These assertions may not have had the slightest foundation in fact. How it now begins to app that’ » had If they did have the oil situation such remarkable little if any warrant. is at that time undergone has change that the larger companies are indulging in a lively scramble to se- cure production and territory whieh promises to be developed into prolific producers ‘There are two excellent r this competition. First, production In Mexico, which at one time amounted to approximately 20 per cent of the world's output is petering out in un- mistakable fashion, The Standard Oi: Company has announced that there is no reasonable hope that the $500,000,000 placed in Mexican prop- erties by investors will be recovered The output of the Transcontinental Company, the Standard Oil unit op- erating in Mexico, has dropped to a minimum, The same is true of other producers, In the judgment of com- potent ofl experts, unless the Mexi- can Petroleum Company, which is re- garded as holding the cream of un- developed territory in that country is able to devélop new sources of sup- ply the output of Mexican oil, in- stead of approximating 20 per cent of the world's production, will drop to a comparatively insignificant per- centage. It is now stated to be down to less than 6 per cent, of the world’s output. Another reason for the competition for oil production and promising ter- ritory is that whereas there was much complaint regarding the comparative lack 0f demand for crude oil a short time back, it apparently has become the consensus of opinion among oil experts that the day is not far dis- tant when demand will tur outstrip production; that it will become a question of where oil can he secured in sufficlent quantities, rather than what can be done with production, Lessons taught by the coal strike, and the practical knowledge gnined by railroad and industrial heads as to the uses to which crude ofl can economically be put have had much to do with recasting opinions. sons for It developed at the recent hearing in Washington on the gasoline situ- ation that while the Standard Oil companies produce approximately 20 per cent. of the oil of this country their holdings of crude oil stocks tn storage aggregated 52% per cent. of the total. That the judgment «* the Standard Oil companies should dic- tate the acquisition of so much of} for storage was somewhat of a Jolt to pessimists on the oil situation. But if reports currently being heard in Wall Street can be relied on, and they have all the ear marks of reliability, the Standard Oll Com- pany is planning to further fortify its position in the domestic ofl indus- try. It is now known that plans for ex- tension of activities have been so de- veloped that negotiations’ are under way for the acquisition of the Pro- ducers and Refining Company, Phil- lips Petroleum, the Cosden Company and the Marland Oi! Company.
