X ” 2 BLIGH ARRIVES FROM ENIARK Mystery as to Origin, but Be- lieved to Have Come From Soviet Sources. ‘Tho largest single abipment of gold hullion ever received in the United States arrived yesterday from Den- Mark. It amounts to between $25,000,000 and $87,000,000, and was brought on the steamship Frederik VIIL. of the Scandinavian-American Line, The bulk of the bullion was consigned to the National Bank of Commerce, which had made no prev~ fous announcement that such a ship ment was coming. The origin of the gold, according to the ship's officers, is unknown, but it Probably ts safe to say that it was Russian or Swedish gold taken from the mints of that country in exchange for Russian unmarked metal. Several months ago, officials of the United States Mint made a ruling that any gold bearing the mint mark ot a friendly country would be ac- ceptable for deposit and credit here Since that time a great deal of gold sent directly from Russia to Sweden, minted, marked and reshipped. In other cases the Russian gold was de- posited in its vaults by the Swedes end a similar amount of minted gold withdrawn and reshipped to the United States. ‘There is no doubt expressed by Dankers in the financial district that large amounts of Russian gold have thus been recelved in the United States and now repose in ‘the Sub- treasury and Assay Office vaults. In all cases, the receiving bank has acted merely as the agent of a fore-}, ign correspondent in the transaction and has had no further interest in it. —>———_. DANTEL W. CLAYTON, Surrogate Daniel W.
