Youth and Maturity in Piano Competition on Two Stages, By Frank H. Warren. Two pianists held the music fort Jast evening, Mme. Elly Ney in Car- negie Hall, her fifth and final recital of the season, and the younger Wini- fred Byrd of Oregon, in Aeolian Hall. Mme. Ney is an imposing figure at the plano with her head a mass of golden hair, bobbed, but bulbous, beating time, time, time to a sort of tunic rhyme. The diminutive Miss Byrd is also of the bobbed school, out- stripping Mme. Ney in fluffiness. Ar- tistically considered, Mme. Ney's years and experience naturally are in her favor. She is an individualist, im addition to being a student of music, and, therefore, succeeds in keeping the interest alive in a long Brahms group, as she did last evening when she opened her programme with seven of that vemposer’s shorter compositions. Schubert's D major sonata followed it, which, in turn, was followed by C@opin’s Fantasie in F minor and Schumann's symphonic studies, opus 18. Mme. Ney has had quite @ successful first season in America. She has played here four- teen times, in Chicago, four, Detroit, twice, and once in Boston, Milwaukee, Montreal, New Orleans and many other musical centres. She ranks among the leading pianists of her sex and she expects to return to us next season—which is good news. Were she a singer one might thus para- phrase a song that, possibly, would be in her repertoire: “Oh, you charming Elly Ney, you have taken with your play.” As for Miss Byrd, Mr. Hunéker omce' remarked of her, “she blazes |D'A | Easton, » Delaunois; Harrold and Chal- |. mers; evening, ‘‘Andrea Chenier,” by the world. |Muzio, Gigli, Danise and Didur. FRANCISCO, April 12.—Guar- antors for the Chicago Grand Opera Company will have to stand.an assess- ment of ‘‘not more than $65,000 at the outside,” for the deficit incurred by the company in the two weeks just con- cluded here. Leading San Francisco citizens prom- ised to make good failure of the gross receipts to reach $200,000, it is sald. Last year San Francisco set a record for opera attendance for the country, 7,800 with receipts of $26,000 when Mary Garden sang in “Thats,” with temperament.” She, too, has a personality that ingects itself into the compositions she has under hand. The temperament seemed to be more restrained Jast evening, however, a fact that did not prevent her giting very acceptable interpretations of the Chopin group of preludes and one etude. Her tone was a bit dry at times and she let moments of dulness bob up in the “Blue Danube,” ar- ranged for ‘flowery display. Miss Byrd seems to have gained {n playing and intempretative power gince last g@eason, a good omen. ut those locks attracted us, and, soothed by her rhythmic beat, we unconsciously found ourself adapting it to the thought, “Oh, Winifred Byrd has come out of the West; through all the wide border her locks are the best.” Orpha Kendall Holstman, soprano, gave a recital in Aeolian Hall in the afternoon. She has a nice yolce that averages well up with the majority of vocalists who have graced the sea- son's concert stage. For those who busy themselves with the fortunes of opera the Met- ropolitan, for next week, getaway week, has arranged this bill: Mon- day afternoon, benefit performance of “Carmen,” cast headed by Miss Far- rar, maybe for the last time, Har- rold and Mardones; night, ‘Cosi fan Tutte,” fourth time, with Easton, Peralta, Bori, Meader and De Luca. Wednesday, “Die Walkuere,” sung by Easton, Claussen, Kingston, Whitehill, Gustafson. Thursday, matinee, “Snow Maiden,"’ with Bori, Either New or Used from the PLIDDEN Mator& Supply Co AUTHORIZED BUICK EXCHANGE DEALERS 239 W. 58th St. at Broadway Your present car accepted as part payment if desired 1921—Repainted 1920—Rebuilt . 1919—Guarante that every person should consider carefully before buying a water ater, ‘ Ast—the responsibility of the manufacturer. 2d—the service back of ft, no matter where or from whom you buy, j—the durability and service. ability of the product itself. ‘The Lovekin embodies all these and gives continudus hot-water service day and night without any work or worry on your part, | were .97 moving ey Teeth Without Plates Save Decayed Teeth Tighten Loose Teeth Treat Diseased Gums | Badly Decayed Teeth and Roots Carefully Extracted.
