WOMEN TEACHERS , FIGHT A FIRE ON ~— BARREN ISLAND Drenched to the Skin, They Save Forty Houses With “ School Drill Hose. * Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of city property and more than forty homes are still standing en Barren Island to-day only through the courage of four school teachers. Drenched to the skin, chilled to the marrow by a 35-mile wind blowing out of the ocean, these four women battled a disastrous fire on the island for more than an hour, until the fireboat William J. Gay- mor was able to make the twelve miles from Buttermilk Channel, tn Ahe Upper Bay to the island com- Munity in Jamaica Bay. Nearly haif the population of Brooklyn, attracted by the glaring red aky, wondered where the fire was. ‘The miles of thickly settled sections along the bay—Brownaville, Flatbush, Jamaica, Canarsie, Richmond Hill on the Heights and the Rockaways—saw the flames. They knew there was enly a small volunteer emergency fire equipment on the island and it was mot long before many boats put out from Sheepshead Bay, Rockaway {niet und other points to offer help. Hundreds of automobiles from all parts of the interlor of Brooklyn headed for the bay. Those on the west side of the barough thought Manhattan Beach was on fire, Those further north and east feared Rocka- way was going up in flames. From the higher parts of Manhattan tele- phone calls were received from per- sons who thought all of Brooklyn was on fire. When the flames were first dis- covered last night Miss Jane Shaw, principal of P. 8. No. 120 on Barren Island, which stands opposite the four one-story cottages destroyed by the fire, called three of her teachers, Carrie Beards, Helen Hall and Georgia Handberger. All live next to the school. The teachers hurriedly dressed and put on raincoats and ran over Into the school, where they found two lines of hose used in fire drills. Though soon soaked to the skin, and forced to work in @ high wind, they played water on the burning structures and scores of times doused sparks that fell on nearby roofs. Harbor Policeman John Schmitt~- knecht and Philip Steimer, who had seen the fire from their launch in Jamaica Bay, landed, and the hose was turned over to them. Meanwhile the wind was blowing embers with such profusion among the scores of nearby buildings they were all in danger, and when the teachers abandoned the hose they organized a bucket brigade. They pressed into service every resident who could be found. The fire started in the cottage oc- cupied by Alfonso Boisa, and de- stroyed the homes of Michael Schlis- ky, Tony Thiliski and Rocco Parro, all employed in manufacturing con- cerns on the island. B.
