Approval. al From a Staff Correspandent of The Evening World.) ALBANY, March 17.—A bill which may pave the way to low priced gas for New York City and State has just passed both houses of the Legisla- ture. It concerns by-product Bas. The provisions of this bill, already get forth in these columns, will make ft possible for gas compantes to con- tract with by-product corporations, with the consent of the Public Service Commission, for gas to supply con- gumers instead of making gas under the present methods. “4” It.was claimed before the Legisia- gl the residuals can be sold by chem- fieal companies and the gas, in the ihature of a by-product, may thus be rodticed much cheaper than at the resent rate. |) It is estimated gas can be served at ‘4 cost to the consumer of 60 cents per thousand fect and even less. This mew by-product gas is under a stand- lard of British thermal units. The ipresent standard in New York City is ‘the 22-candle power. The Public Service Commission ts jnow conducting hearings on the pro- \posal of changing the standard from ¢andie power to the British thermal ‘anit, which is much cheaper. ‘The move has long been urged by this newspaper in order to reduce the rice of gas. If the Governor signs the above mentioned bill the Public Service Commission may go Into the subject of by-product gas, but no ntract can be made for this by- vo €ommittees that the gas from kK can be made In such a way that product gas without the approval of the Public Service Commission, ac- \fording to the bill.
