The Byways of Fashion TRIMMINGS ARE FORMED FROM THE FROCK’S OWN FABRIC, ASSISTING SIMPLICITY’S EXPRESSION Organdie With Taffeta, Silk Flowers for Girdles, and Ostrich Feathers Done Into All Sorts p By Margery Wells. Copyright, 1922 (The New York Bening» World) by the Press Publishing Co. IMPLICITY is the motto of the S season, And as each new frock makes its appearance upon fashion’s stage the cleverness of be- ing simple becomes more apparent. You have had the experience—we all have had it—of attempting to be chastely simple in designing a frock and of finding out that the result ae plain stupid. That is the dread pit- © fall lying in wait for inexperience. But this season the manner of ac- complishing a simple effect seems to be so well worked out and planned that there is no reason why every frock created and worn should not be entirely right, and, above everything else, satisfactory to its owner. Folded Bands of Trimming. In the picture of the house frock on this page you will see folded bands of the frock's fabric, which fs soft crepe de Chine by the way, made into lattice work that furnishes the trim- ming and makes a_ porfion of the dress at the same time. Could any- thing be more effective? Could you hope to find a more illusive, feminine thing with which to make yourself look charming? And only think of the ease with which it has been ac- complished! You take a little strip of your ma- terial and fold it together, subjecting it to the weight of a hot iron to press it into place. Then you create your trimming bands by basting the little folds on a stiff piece of paper and fastening them together where they cross so that the design will be held firmly in place. That is simplicity with the greatest degree of its ex- pression and you will find that any number of the spring and summer gowns are made with some portion of this character of decoration. Braided Belts. For the heavier sports dresses we are finding braided belts made much in the manner of the trimmings just described. Because of the weight of the material now in question the oper- ation is just a little different. Long strips of tweed or homespun about a half inch in width are used and each of these is bound with a narrow bit of grosgrain ribbon-or silk braid. Then four or five of the strips are taken together and plaited to make a belt from four to six inches in width. It makes a band that is thick and hunky looking and entirely suitable for the sports dresses which have taken all the young women in New York by storm. As a matter of fact, they don't like to wear anything else. They are only happy in dresses of this character and a different sort of belt helps to give an individuality-and impart charm. Organdie Trims Taffeta. Little points of organdie, tiny squares of organdie, picoted edges of organdie—all of these little things are used for the trimming of taffeta day- time frocks, destined to be smart for spring. The stiffness of the cotton material and the freshness of its quality are lovely against the crisp taffeta, and when the combination is dark blue and white, then the com- bination is at its best. But they are doing the organdie- taffeta trick in many colors. They are using brown taffeta with orange organdie; gray taffeta with blue and pink organdie; sand colored taffeta with violet organdie, and so on through all the color unions that are possible in.this direction. Silk Blossoms for Girdles. One of the ‘happy moments among the newer frocks comes when the flowered girdles become noticeable. They are not the obvious sort of flowers—not by any means. They . are, on the contrary, fashioned from strips of the gown's own material and es ar Ree & of Ornamentation Are the New Accessories to the Modern Wardrobe. so cleverly curled and arranged that they look almost handsomer than na- ture. On a frock of canna colored crepe (this is the ‘newest tone of réd) there was a girdle made of thick roses shaped from the same crepe. The flowers were placed close to each other so that, at the low waistline and under the bloused bodice, they gave only the divergence of line which was necessary there. Then they are making big curly ehrysanthemums of cords of the fabric. These are particularly beau- titul in the violet tones or in. yellow, used usually on gowns of the same color, Flowers of this sort are even placed around the hems of one-piece frocks Folded Bands of Crepe Are Formed Into a Lattice Work of Trimming for a House Dress of Salmon and Silver. Around the mask for a fancy dress party there is a fringe of ostrich which might almost be taken for permanently waved hair. But it does help, most miracu- lousiy, to make the mask a becoming and a decorative thing instead of just a piece Of material placed there frankly to hide the eyes. How much better it is to have it beautiful while you are about it, Then they are usiag egtrich to make good looking gartermm and, fn these days of the non-corseted figure, every one needs a garter whether she rolis her stockings or not, Ostrich curled into an armlet with bangles of pearls hanging from it is something interesting made to ac- company a feather fan of the same coloring and, mounted on a tortoise shell stick and not so large and spreading in shape as most of these fans have been . The little slippers are made of feathers closely «applied over the leather foundation and the many shining colors of the birds’ coats have a happy effect in this new usage. Jewels for Sport Clothes. Jewels for sport clothes are not done, really The two things do not go together, that fs all. And yet so many of the girls one meets upon the street show earrings or jewelled hat pins or diamond bracelets or some other incongruous ornament along with their heavy tweeds.
