ONLY SIO ADRNK “ALLHEPAYS FOR EAL OLD STUFF Albany Bon Vivant Hands Over $1,300 for 50 Gallons, but Really Gets 4 Quarts. (Bpecial to The Evening World.) ALBANY, Feb. 13.—One of the best known business men of Albany, club- ™an, bon vivant and one time social Non of the Capital City, with the rep- utation of being among the shrewdest @f dealers in legitimate lines of en- @eavor, is now the “best discussed" figure in town in connection with the Jatest exploit of the bootlegging fra- nity. He was approached one day last wee kby a whispering Negro who wanted to know if he would like to try some of the best rye that ever came over the Canadian border. Bus- iness stopped right there and in a dark corner of his office the merchant sniffed and then swallowed some of the precious contents of the pint Mask. His lips smacked and his eyes sparkled, and before he could frame a question the “agent” told him he could get him 150 gallons at $26 per. Although it isn't generally known, there are hidden places in the hills of Albany where liquor is dispensed and where more of it is always in demand. ‘The merchant hung on to the pint and im less than an hour had disposed of the 150 gallons at $30 a gallon, with the dispensers of the stuff bogging for more. They hud tasted the sample. ‘The stuff, he wus told, wa Schenectady and thither riven in the automobile of a friend Jast Friday afternoon. He was met by a second Negro who was very mys- terious about the movements of hy master, but declared the latter wante the merchant to test bit of Nquor before he paid f There was room int Bot more than fifty every sit s machine tor Hons of the ry and the owner came back with his Negro vassal with the eye-sparbling | and soul-stirring stuff in five ten allon cans. The cans were of tin, | nd in shape and surmounted hy} domes, in the centre of which was un opening from which the liquor could be drawn. There was an outer cover ing of wood! paper encircled with pink painted hoops at top and bottom. “You bet [ll test it,"? said the mer- chant. He unscrewed the nozzle of the first ean and stuck his finger in the aper- ture to be sure that there was no rick compartment undernes His finger touched no si¢ n he tuck a twig through the opening and yhen it came out it was wet with the his friend he gurgling and floppin: inside. It was a full ean ach can in turn was the owner, with a visage Mike a walnut and as blank, halmly on and then solemnly ac pted twenty-six fifty-dollar bills in payment for the stock. He told the erchant to drive slowly, as the s were pretty bad, and the mer- phant promised to be back in an hour nd a half for the second shipment of tty gallons. “It weems too good to be truc,” bommented the merchant as his riend steered the car toward the road ding to Alban “I thought so,"" he added a moment pter ‘as the police patrol of Schenec- ly swung into view “We're e got the money and how they're going to take the goods But the police patrol swung off in nother direction and both men breathed freely. Half a mil out of jjown they saw two members of the State constabulary, and then they wrinkled looked vere sure that the jig was up. The |itate cops were in a Ford. “No use trying to run, suid the nerchant We've ot to try and iss them."* But the constables stopped in front f a house and disappeared indoors. | ynother hair-breadth escape, and the to Albany was, clear to them. ‘They reached their destination with- ut molestation, the liquor was again sted, a pint poured out from one of 1e cans, and the healths of ‘all gale turns Storm Hero inside out simply pall ie pack again, A ri paaadily me eo wind it. Just as the merchant and his friend were about to start back for the sec- ond consignment, there was a shout from a rear room. “Something wrong here!'’ yelled the bartender, and he came out with a tick with which he had measured the contents of the can. “Short measure,’’ he said. ‘We've been done. The stick don’t go within four inches of the bottom.’ They tilteé the ten gallon can and poured off the contents into a five- gallon measure, When the measure contained « quart the flow ceased. All the cans wore tilted and the contents poured, The result wa ssomething less than four quarts in all. Huck to Schenectady sped the auto- mobile, The merchant was late, but was sure he would find that wrinkled visage waiting for him. But it wasn’t, Nobody in Schenectady had ever heard of him or of the second Nexro. They hunted for him and the $1,300 for an hour in vain and then drove back to the s: One of the cans had been punctured and the top ripped off. Underneath the opening, a pewter funnel had been placed, the stem of whjch ran to the bottom, or near to the battom of the can, ‘The stem was securely helt in place by braces fro mthe four sides of the can, and the space surrounding the funnel and stem was filled with some liquid of which kerosene oil was the predominant factor. Evidently, this was to keep the whiskey in the funnel from freezing. “Four quarts for $1,300,"" mused the merchant “That's $ quart. Let's have « drink.’ “It's mighty good rye," loon man “It ought to be, at $10 a drink.” GIRL, 4, TELLS OF SEEING HER PARENTS MURDERED Raby Onty ‘ope of Selving Brutal aying.
