.. Special From a Staff Correspondent of The Evening World. ALBANY, Jan. 18. Here are some of the up-to-the- moment happenings in and about the Legislature of especial inter- est to Greater New York: The contest of former Senator Daniel J. Carroll for the seat of Benator Abraham L. Katlin of Brooklyn ce. up yesterday af- ternoon befd®? tne Couimittee on Privileges and Elections, of which Senator Schuyler M. Meyer ts Chairman. Another meeting will be held next Tuesday at which the contest will probably be de- | eided. A recount has already been held | NEWS OF STATE LAWMAKERS AND DOINGS AT ALBANY OF INTEREST TO NEW YORKERS -Carroll’s Fight for His Senate Seat Up Again—Straus Would Have Women on Jury Lists—Other Measures. ’ in Brooklyn, the result of which was in favor of Senator Carroll, giving hi™M the election by 152 votes, independent of about 600 contested votes, the majority of whiéh are in his favor. _ Senator Nathan Strau$ has de- veloped into a champion of the ladies, so far as the elective fran- chise cencerns the gentler sex. The Senator to-day introduced a bill which would admit women to jury duty on an equal basis with the men. Mr. Straus believes that the representation of Justice by @ woman should be carried out in effect as well as the efigy. He said of the women: “Tho mother who renders wise THE EVENING WORLD, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1922, MRS. Senator Lockwood of Brook- lyn introduced a bill amending the New York charter by making pen- sions to dependents of members of the police force, not less than one-half nor more than full sal- ary per year of such member. The present Pensioh law allows not more than $600 a year. Senator Swift of Buffalo has introduced a bill which might prove of interest to New Yorkers while it has nothing to say of the residents of the Greater City. The bill would amend the Domestic Relations law, by providing for the dissolution of marriage on proof of the absence of either of the parties for five successive years, and the belief that the party absent is dead. Senator Thomas Sheridan, who succeeded ‘‘Marty’’ McCue from Charles F. Murphy's district, in New York, wants the Board of Estimate authorized to grant a two-year continuance upon appli- cation, to members in the city service who are seventy years or over. The board may renew the grant for one or more two-year periods. Senator Bernard Downing wants dyne capes. Of crepe NO C. 0. As the peasants fled tefore the German armies into larger towns the country women learned, through contact with city life, that ordinary labor brought re~ turns far beyond those possible to the lace worker, impairing her eyesight in tedious weaving. Thus the returning workers to lace weaving are few in numbers, and the agt that was one of the high lights of European culture threatens to become more or less extinct. French hand-made Laces will soon become a rarity. While they are available and prices are still moder- ate, lovers of sare hand-made laces should purchase.
