ae a ‘10 TO 11. Pessimism of professional traders in the stock market was increased this morning by several Gevelopmente of @n unfavorable nature and by the Widespread circulation ¢. unfavorable Tumors. Stocks were offered on the Market in rather liberal quantities, and in the absence of demand on the part of the public or inside Interests the entire list, with few exceptions, had a heavy tone. The statement made lpte yesterday by Vice Pres'dent Atterbury of the Pennsylvania Railroad that that , ®ompany would be forced into rm ceivership or whuld have -to ‘under Government ownership unless railroad wages are further reduced, evidently alarmed many holders of Failroad securities. His pessimistic Prediction was given added weight by the fact that, if reports from the West are to be relied upon, railway workers, including those belong ng to the powerful Brother- hoods, are voting practically unan Mmously to reject the wage reduc- tions which went into effect on July 1 last. Then, there can be no glossing over the fact that the market is disturbea by the uninterrupted decline in the value of German marks. Early this morning the mark was quoted at 81 one hundredths of a cent, a new low record and a loss of more than six points compared with the low of yesterday. Other unfavorable developments of the morning were the suspension of dividefids by the Superior &teel Company, which have been at the Fate of 6 per cent. annually, and re- ports that weveral large corpora- tions whose securities are traded in -on the New York Stock Exchange, after a series of conferences with bankers, have found it impossible to Faise funds needed to avert receiver- ships. Opposed to the heaviness of stocks, the bond market continued agtive and strong, with jiberty issues touching new high records for the year and with industrial and rail- road bonds registering fractional @dvances. After early unsettlemen® the cotton market turned strong, advances amounting to as much as | $2. bale, and most fore gn exchange rates again refused to become dis- turbed by the extreme weakness »f~ exchange on Germany. . Pennsylvania Railroad stock declined | nearly a point, and other leaders in! the railroad group went down to the extent of substantial fractions. New reports of salt water in’ the; United States Steel Corporation sub- | Mexican oil field accelerated the! decline in Mexican Petroleum*and it fell below 98. Steel shares were | comparatively steady, being helped by more favorable trade reports, but the equipments and miscellane- ous industrials lacked buying eup- port and turned heavy on slight of- ferings. 4 {11-70 12, ‘The market continued to be heavy throughout the second hour. Mexi- can Petroleum was the weakest feature, It dropped to 971-2, a loss of more than two points compared with the final figure of yesterday, Other oil shares were off a point or more and apparently were un nflu- enced by an advance of 2 cents « barrel in Pennsylvania and other Eastern crude oil. Equipments, the rails and miscellaneous industrials all fadled to develop ‘rallying power and hovered around the lowest prices of the morning and at net de- clines ranging from good sized frac- tions to more than two points. * It seemed that, temporarily at least, the improvement in stee! trade con- ditions, as attested by Increasing orders and advances in prices, the sensational improvement in rail- way earnings the sharp decrease in the cost of money, improvement in bonds, the rise in cotton and grains, the firmer tendency of oll | prices, improved textile conditions § and stronger prospects of the en- actment of highly constructive legislation by the present session ef Congress were al! lost sight of. a 12 TO 1. 4 —— ‘The market continued to move slug, gishly during the noon hour and failed to develop rallying power of consequences, The official call money rate was raised to 61-2 por cent., owing to the withdrawal of funds by !nterior institutions, and this without reason served to In- crease the bearishness" of floor traders. Btop-loss orders placed by bears were caught in Mexican Petroleum, and it Fan up above par, a gain of nearly 4 points over the low of the morn- ing, but the rally was not long su, tained. Pennsylvania fell below 38 for a net loss of about @ point and |ts seem- Features of the Trading, Hour by Hour ing lack of support further unsettled other leading rails. A new budget of highly favorable railroad earninss statements atally disregarded Even the announcement of further important advances in prices of leading steel products was without appreciable effect on the steel group. The market was at an almost com- plete standstil) during the fourth hour, Even tho volatile specialties moved within a small fractional range and without a semblance of definite trend, Although the mar- ket was without support in the shape of public uying, bears seemed deterred from pushing their advantage by the fact that The present short interest is so large as to be almost unwieldy The cotton market moved in sharp contrast with stocks, Under urgent buying cotton for near delivery ad- vanced 120 points, or $8 @ bale, and later options rose more than 4 a bale. « Professionals remained in the market during the and final prices in most instances were at or close to the lowest of the day with net declines ranning from fractions to more than points compared with the final fig- ures of yesterday Heaviest pressure was against the oils, but United States Steel touched 79 the low of the day, Pennsyl- vania « new low for the movement at 37 6-8 AWM sugar stocks turned Unmistakably weak. Copper shares held comparatively firm, apparently reflecting improvement in metal conditio charge of last hour, ass Wall St. Gossip It is understood thay the long awaited plan of reorganization of the Missourl, Kansas and Texas Rallway will be announced shortly, before the end of the current week, and that it will propose an, assess- ment of $20 on each shure of pre- ferred stock and an assessment of | $25 on each share of common Despatches’ from Cleveland to-day ‘stated that the Carnegie Steel Com- | pany, one of the largest of the sidaries, had advanced the price of steel plates, shapes and bars, This on wire and sheet, Holders of sugar securitics were encouraged to-day by the announce- ment that the Cuban Sugar Commis- raw sigar to 2 6-4 cents a pound. The commission has been stubbornly holding to a 8 1-4 ennt quotation in spite of the fact thar sales of sugar {rom oiher countries have been made at the equivalent «* 2.49 cents for Cabas. The reduction in quotation by | the Cuban Sugar Commission en- ciances the prospect that the large | rplus stocks of the commodity in) Cuba will gradually and that sugar brokers will be placed in @ stronger financial position A meeting of dire Cola Company will be held late to- day, and while no on: js in a position to state farsa tes A what action will be taken on the dividend it is anticipated in quarters usually well informed that a disbursement of $1 a share will be ordered. Disbursements were sus- | pended some montis ugo primarily, Dovause of the company's large stock | ors of the Coca- | ef high priced sugar, but it un- dorsto 4d that this higa priced sugar hos been worked off, and that the company’s financial position has been materially improved, Demand sterling and continental ex- change rates continue to display sin- gular indifference to the extreme weakness of German marks. While the mark was quoted at 81-100 of a cent this morning, a new low record, demand sterling showed a small over- night gain, French francs at 7.1 cents were off only 41-2 points, Bel- ian francs at 7.04 were off’ only 11-4 points and Italian lire at 413 were off only,1-2 @ point. In later dealings all exchanges recovered most of their earlier decline: Directors of the Superior Steel Company to-day decided to suspend dividends on the common stock. ‘The last payment Was at the rate of § hare annually, LIBERTY BONDS. Buying orders came into brokerage houses for Liberty Bonds and Vic- tory Notes in volume to-day, and seven of the nine Government issues which yesterday went to their year's ‘high marks were carried still further. The biggest order was for $1,000,000 Victory 33-48 at 99.50, an overnight gain of two points and an advance of 8.60 from it's year's low. Other issues made gains of about 20 points, « According to bankers of experi- ence, the present price movement will carry many of the Liberty Bonds to par by the end of 1922. All of the nine issues have made advances, ranging from $2.40 to 80, and all except Liberty 31-28 and Victory 33-48 are now at new high levels for the year, This movement Is, in the view of Wall Street financial housés, a morror of future money rates. The trend to- day, they believe, 1s toward lower in- terest rates, but on more substantiai investments. The day of hit-or-miss speculation seems near its close. Re- cans Ie 1s turning {ts attention more and more to {ssues backed by civic or Fed- eral or State necurities and to-day the Liberty and Victory series are in ac- tive competition with the highest erade Municipal bonds. A number of factors have entered into the rive of the Federal series. Voreed selling of Liberty and Victory issues by corporations who a‘ few months ago were instructing brokers to “dispose of them at the best prices you can get"? has passed, and large concerns aro now holding on to the a refunding scheme which will auto- window on the second floor to a cour ard. We anticipate continued activity*on an advancing scale for the rails, eape- cially the dividend-payers, such .as Reading, Pennsylvania, Southern Pa- cific, Northern Pacific, Great Northern Pfd., Union Pacific and the reorgan- ized rails such as the Rock Island and Missouri P cific issues.
