E., D. Se. Copsright, 19¢t, by the Presa: Publishing Co (The om York Proving World) T HB first details as 'o number and location of foreign born residents of the eevera boroughs of New York City have just been given out by tne United States Census Bureau covering the 1920 enumeration, The figures reveal many queer shilts in the makeup of the forcign born popula- + 9 and some of them are no. only diMeuit to analyze but more than diffi- elt to explain leven years ago more than two- tthe of the entire population of thy City of New York were n in for- eign countrice Last year's census discloses the fact thet our forego born new equal but 8 per cent, of the total population, The World War and the consequent failing off in immigration, of course, had @ considerable influence in the number of aliens added to tho pupu- lation of the city, but without the knowledge (that hundreds of thou- sande of aliens have returned to their native lands during the last thre: years It would scem that the incre of foreign born over 1910 should ve more than 63,844. Every one of the boroughs ex- cept Manhattan shows a marked increase in number of foreign born, although in every borough with the exception of the Bronx the percentage of foreign born to total population decreased, In Manhattan the foreign born population decreased from 1,104, 019 in 1910 to 922,000 in 1920. This loss of 181,939 accounts in part for the decline in the number of peo- ple residing in the borough during the past decade, It is but natural to expect a de crease in German born residents, not cnly because there has been very Little immigration from Germany for many years, even before the war, but because, as the map of Europe is now constituted, those born in German Poland and Alsace-Lorraine are cred- ited to Poland and to France in the latest enumeration figures. In 1910 there were 278,114 German Dorn in the city. Last year there were Dut 103,850 native Germans, a loss of 14,264. The loss in Manhattan was 47,284; Bronx, 6,910; Brooklyn, 31,153; Richmond, 502. Queens alone showed an increase, from 30,252 to 32,347. Natives of Austria decreased from 190,287 to 126579. The decrease in Manhattan was 71,927, over 8,200 more than the total decrease for the city Brooklyn decreased 3,932, Queens, & and Richmond 246. It is dificult to explain just why the Bronx showed an increase of 19,280 native born t se HOW N. ¥..S FOREIGN BORN POPULATION 1S DISTRIBUTED Per Cent. Queens dropped from %8 per cent. ~ to Jess than 24 per cent. and Rich- inond from 28 per cent. to 27 per cent. Bronx of all the boroughs is the only one which increased in percent age of foreign born, the figures being 25 per cent. for 1910 and 36 per cor 1920.
