THE EVENING WO RLD, SATURDAY, JULY 23, 1921, YOU SFIOULD WHEN AND WHERE WHAT You — By Mildred Lodewick. Copyright, 1921, by the Press Publishing Co, (The Now York Bee World.) HHESE languid summer nights, moon-lit and rose-scented, are responsible for all sorts of de- Nghtful things. The fan for instance, that gracious genie of the zophyrs, that artful weapon of woman, is seen in most attractive and interesting forms. I saw one that was waved by @ white-halred matron, made of black net on a round non-collapsible shapv, all glittering with jet embroidery, A debutante beside her flirted coyly with a fan that was also of a non- collapsible sort, but shaped like the collapsible ones and finished across the top. Tiny pink rosebuds decorated the fan, which was edged with a frill of Jace held with a blue enamel stick. The effect was very dainty. Quite in contrast was a fan I noticed a young society matron fluttering im- patiently on a hotel veranda the other morning. It was made of heavy paper, shaped Hke the well known variety of collapsible fans mentioned before, but with its top edge cut in irregular form to outline gay flowers that were painted upon it. The han- dle was a mere hole cut in the lower end of the fan. I have seen fringe employed on fans in an effective manner, one especially pretty one being shown here. A wire frame stretched over a piece of cloth of gold is surrounded with looped fringe of black silk. Narrow jet banding covers the wire on each side and also the loop handle.
