| How Little Old Broadway Madison Square to 42d Street When the “White Light”’ District Moved Uptown to Its Second Location—Past Old Hotels, Theatres and Stores Famous in Their Day—How the ‘‘Tenderloin’’ Got Its Name. Albemarle, at @ith Street; Hotel Victoria, southeast corner 27th Street, where Cleveland ved after his first term; Coleman House (west side, between 27th and Zath); Gilsey House, building stand- hg at northeast corner 29th Street; Normandie (38th), Vendome (41st), Albany (between 40th and dist) are well known here, ‘The Knickerbocker Hotel is now an office building, since Prohibition drove “Old King Cole” from its famous barroom at 42d Street. On the corner once etood the St. Cloud Hotel, famiHer to old New Yorkers, Across from ‘the Knicker- bocker stood the old Rossmore Hotel, later Metropole and St. Charles, also the million dollar Cafe de Opera (1909), which survived enly four months. Begitming 1895 the Herald Sqnare Theatre stood at 6th Street (north- west corner), which was put on its last legs in 1911 by a plece im which the writer figured as author. The Coliseum was here 1873 New York Aquarium in 1876, Park in 1883 and Harrigan’s in 1885. Henry E. That is the way the lovers who collect at the Stadium at 157th Street and listen to the choicest music feel. Dainty, soft music by Mendelssohn, Chaminade and McDowell float through the summer breezes and time passes as though one were in fairyland.
