Total National Expenditures to Reach at Least $5,000,000,000, (From a Staff Correspondent of The Evening World.) WASHINGTON, July 11.—For purely civil purposes, Congressional appropriations for this year have | been materially increased over last year. In the six supply bills devoted to such purposes—agriculture, dip- lomatte and consular, District of Columbia; legislative, executive ond Judicial expenses; Post OMice Depart- ment and rivers and harbors—there has been an increase of $81,084,156.64 for the fiscal year beginning July 1 over the amounts appropriated in the sume bills and for like purposes for the fiscal year just ended This tabulation does not take into account the Army and Navy Appro- priation Bills, or the Sundry Civil Bill, which carries many items for Matters growing out of the war, Some “paper” reductions in Gov- ernment expenses were shown by Chairman Good of the House Appro- priations Committee last winter, when many departmental estimates, care- Jessly drawn by outguing department heads, were slashed to the extent of several hundred million dollars, Scrutiny of the appropriation bills approved to date shows that when the reappropriations, indefinite appropri- ations and all commitments are fig- ured in, the expenses of the Govern- ment for the new fiscal year will total at least $5,000,000,000, Some of the supply bills which show increases for the new year are: Agriculture—Last year's ..ppropria- ston, $81,712,784.
