REVOLT OF VOTERS OVER. 0.P. WASTE WORRIES CONGRESS Majority Leaders Warned Con- tinued Extravagance Means Disaster at Polls. TAX CUT IS DEMANDED West Wants to Know What Is Being Done to Redeem Campaign Pledges. {Special to The Brening World ) WASHINGTON, June 8—Members ef the Republican National Commit- tee who came fresh from their re- @pective States for the Washington pow-wow are bringing news which is eausing cold chills to chase up the spines of some of those who have een exceeding the speed limit in voting money out of the public Treas- ary, The committeemen, who are the political “scouts” of the party, are unanimous on the point that the citi- zens they have come in contact with are insistent on knowing what is pre- venting the new Congress from put- ting into effect the economy pro- @ramme about which so much was said In the last compaign, “The thing I hear regularly in my section,” said a Western member, “is, ‘what is Congress doing to reduce Government expenses and taxes?’ I expected to find on my arrival here that there was spme well planned programme to redeem this pledge, but, to my surprise, it is the same old story—everybody is helping to make It easy to get money out of the Treas- ury and nobody is paying any par- ticular attention to the taxpayers’ interests.’ "* The committeemen say that the in- | creased appropriations being made for the army, navy and various Govern- | ment agencies, are not passing un- noticed back home, but, on the con- trary, are provoking vigorous critl. cism which will have to be satisfac- torily met, in the elections next year if the Republicans are to hold their majority in Congress. Members of Congress admit, some- what mournfully, that they do not see any chance for early improvement in regard to reducing appropriations. “Lack of leadership” is the way some good observers size up the present muddled situation in Congress. In the Senate and House there is no coherency of purpose on the majority side, Senator Lodge, veteran Repub- lican Jeader in the upper branch, is reported tired of his task of trying to hold the Republicans together and is going @hortly for a long vacation in New Bngland. He wants to name his sucu@Asor, but the Western Republi- > 48 have rejected his choice of Sen- ator Brandegee for acting leader. The West is suspicious that the Fast is trying to “put something over,” while {t dominates the situa- tion and is threatening trouble over the permanent tariff, which will not be what the West expected after all the talk of “protecting the farmer’ when the emergency bill was up. The Western@ Republicans say Lodge is snobbish and won't speak to many of | them, and there is a well defined sen- timent that may repudiate his leader- ship entirely if a healing salve ts not applied to the sore spots, All the vigor on the Republican side in the Senate Is from the West, and unfortunately for the majority, the Westerners, such as Lenroot of Wis- consin, Kehyon of Iowa, Borah of Idaho and Johnaon of California, are not susceptible to party discipline, These Senators are blazing away with both barrels of their oratorical guns at anything they regard as a good target without any special regard for THE EVENING WORLD, WEDNESDAY, party welfare, and the Old Guard Sen- ators are compelled to sit and listen with chagrin, In the Hous, the lack of leadership and cohesion is even more marked. When Representative “Jim” Mann was cast aside for Mondell of Wyom- ing as floor leader the Republicans lost an able parliamentarian, This veteran member comes to the rescue occasionally when the Republican side is in distress under the assaults of an aggréasive minority. The Demd- crats are living up to their past repu- tation as showing .more “pull to- gether” spirit when in the minority than when controlling Congress. The present outlook is that all the pledges of the former campaign will be knocked into a cocked hat.
