Willard Mack | In “Smooth as Silk” | By CHARLES DARNTON | ‘That dauntiess anthor-actor, Will- ard Mack, has brought back the crook play and is braving fate, snow- drifts and slang with “Smooth as Buk” at the Lexington Theatre. But once again Mr. Mack insists upon being unusual—and this may mean calamity in the end. Aé Silk, an ésoaped convict, he utterly refused to take the girl he loves into his dubi- ous life, telling her in so many words that ste is too godd for him and then Taking his way into the possible oblivion of crookdom. He spurns thé “hegpy ending” that might easily find fts éxeuse and its champions on Lexington Avenue Virtue raises a protesting and tardy hand. What then? Well, nothing, The clinging heroine fs cast off and left to her youthful ideals—and that’s rather tough on a girl who has been feeding oranges to a beloved convict. By all odds, she gets the worst of it, con- sidering the affection and care she as lavished on him. But he is a gallant crook, becomes so pure that he will not drag her along with him. Poor “Boots” is left to her oranges and her more bitter reflections. Mr. Mack bears up with an Irish dialect and an eyeglass. He proves his exceptional ability as a cracks- man, exposes a fashionable “invest!- fator” as a thief, and makes the political path easy for “Big Frank” Powers, who is so powerful that he can send ‘em up and bring ‘em back at his own sweet will. “Smooth aa Silk" is good crook melodrama of the familiar sort, with exciting gun-play at intervals and the kind of talk best understood in the underworld. That Mack knows what ho is writing about—call it realism of what you Itke—may readily be . ‘There i, too, every reason for believing that the play has an excelent chance of success in the popular-priced field. It is capably acted, especially by Mr. Mack, who never fails to be interesting and pic- tureaque. Three Debuts Mark Holiday Music in N. Y. Of the batt dozen or more music events that went to make a Tuesday holiday three were debuts here, of which two were nestlings, while the ‘hitd had already tried his wings in Mutope. In the afternoon in Aeolian Hall Mina Dimag, sister of an already farhed brother, exposed her lyric so- praho volee to a friendly audience. Her programme would tax a more mature artist, and truch of it was be- youd Mise Biman’s present abilities. While the voice is pretty, ite poasesor is lacking in the fundamentals of the art of song. In the evening Bina Winston, dramatic soprane, and hall- ing from our own turgid east side, gavo'an unexpectedly good account of 1 Hers is a big voice, of rich quality, with youth still at the vocal prow. But the potentialities are there 4nd worth developing. The foreign visitor was Carlo tind, an experienced fiddier and joxer, of whom many nice things been said in advance. It ia un- e that they were not con- ed by the playing last night, Seldom is one heard so frequently off the pitch or smiting the air with so rough and uncertain a tone.
