* Turning on The Spotlight BY CHARLES DARNTON Common sense is the first thing ‘hat the producer of a play should Dring to the theatre, Without it he 4a lost. But bis loss is small com- pared with that of the actor who stakes his reputation on the turn a Manager happens to take. This is serious business, especially when it concerns an actor upon whom the finer life of our stage depends, You may easily guess that Lionet Barrymore is the actor I have in mind, -He is the victim of circumstances over which he had no control, To condemn his Macbeth is the greatest ingustice that an American critic can fo to an American actor. ‘Tree is @ead. Hut when Tree played the fame part here he played it badly, weakly, as he did in London, yet he gas given a friendly pat on the back. * Léonel Barrymore put his soul and brawn into the character and got more than one kick for the pains he put into his work. Let us be fair, at any rate, with pur actors, It was not Barrymore's fault that Robert E. Jones's freakish setting made “Macbeth” a esperian absurdity. Given a fair or even storehouse scenery, éonel Barrymore would undoubt- @dly have made his way to new heights. But as bad luck, or worse judgment, would have it, he was Hed to pose in a white Nght stand around heavily when he fight have been making vital the- atrical history. So far as Mr. Jones goes he might have been giving his grotesque art to a Japanese tragedy. Mr. Rarrymore would have had just as puch chance of success in an Ori- mtal shop on Fifth Avenue. Mr, fropuine lacked the greatest thing in e World—common sense. But in such a medley of mis- adventure it is the actor who suf- fers most of all—and Mr. Barrymore 4 not be weighted with the bur- om ' ‘THE EVENING WORLD, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1921, _NEXT WEEK’S ATTRACTIONS AT THE THEATRES FEATURE a a POPULAR STARS ehelingeincéill Gn or Wawene, AMUSEMENTS.
