Indictments are expected to be asked against members of the huge Graft ring among customs employees which Byron R. Newton, Collector of the Port, exposed yesterday. Earl B. Barnes, Assistant United States At- torney, to-day is preparing the evi- dence for submission to the Federal Grand Jury. Te was learned to-day that besides accepting gratuities for obligingly “slipping through” the baggage of Wealthy passengers, some of the men had been linked up with smugglers and had aided in the entry into this country of large amounts of unde- clared diamonds and other merchan- @ise as well us liquor and contraband drugs. One practice of certain of the cus- toms employees, {t was said, was to go to the staterooms of jewel smugglers and slip packets of their @oods into their pockets. The smug- giers, who were known, would be searched at the piers, but the author- itles would have to let them go. The next day their accomplice in the customs service would call on the amugglers and ‘deliver the goods, It ig said several instances had been dis- | closed in which niembers of the graft ring double-crossed the smugglers by substituting paste jx or genuine ones before their delivery The investigation indicates Iso, it was eaid, that some of the accused | men worked imeconcert with an inter national ring of dealers in narcotic Many an t Hers called to-day es to lodg’ new cow $ regarding the p ment of * to ewpedite the pa sage af age on incoming liners.
