Pierre Monteux ' And Bostonians; The Symphony By Sylvester Rawling. {ERRE MONTEUX, leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra @ concert in Carnegie Hall Jost nibbt, was greeted cordially as ‘he came upon the stage. He may not be 4 “prima donna” conductor, but he has removed the stigma that, for @ time, was applied to the once pre- eminent organization of “shot all to Pieces.” He has welded the recruits with the old members and marshalled & body of players that commands re- spect. Mr, Monteux began with Tebaikov- , Sky's “Manfred” symphony, founded upon Byron's poem, which, after the first colorful movem Manfred’s wanderings joses strength. “The Fa! Alps" movement is trivia! doral” is of no great weig tnale is more imposing in construc: ‘tion than inspired. D'indy’s descrip~ tive symphony “La Queste de Dieu,” from his opera, “La Legende de St Christophe” came next. It was played recently by Walter Damrosch and the Symphony Orchestra, and was worth bearing again. Mr, Monteux and his musicians gave it a jucid expos! " Then there was Arnold Bax's “A oe Sidhe” ("In the Faery Hills"), ed for the first time in New York, FY musical attempt to suggest the note of the Hidden People im the hills of Ireland after twilight, the composer It is cleverly orchestrated, is not without appeal, and has a re- freshing jig movement; but the mu- sical devices to indicate the fairies aré familiar ones, Mr, Bax might have changed their Nighties, an ir reverent listener whispered in my ear. For the end there was Lalo's ‘overture to “Le Rol d'Y¥'#.” Welter Damrosch and the Sym- phony Orchestra gave a concert at Carnegie Hall yesterday afternoon In the Historical Cycle that was devoted to French composers. The programme Ancluded two movements from Ber- Jios's symphony (after Byron) Harold in Italy, with viola solo by Rene Pol- lain; Saint-Gaens’s third symphony, dedicated to the memory of Listt with Harold Bauer at the plano and Pietro Yon at the organ, and Cesar Franck’s variations for piano and or- chestra, with Mr. Bauer the soloist. Mr. Damrosch and his mustctans in- terpreted each of the works admir- ably and Mr. Bauer played his part with his accustomed lucidity; but there were no stirring moments, e “Pas- ht, and the $ Bong recitals were were given yesterday oy Royal Dadmun, baritone, with Frank Bibb accompanist at the piano, ‘at Aeolian Hall in the afternoon; by Daisy Krey, contralto, accompanied by Bruno Huhn, at the Princess The~ atre in the afternoon, and by Gervase Elwes, tenor, with Theodore Flint at the piano, &t Aeolian Hall in the evening. “Oberon,” at the Metropolitan Opera House last night, with Mr, Rodanzky conducting, was well per- formed, with Rosa, Ponselle, ‘Jeanne Gordon, Delaunois,/Diaz and Mor Kingston in the principal parts. The amusing part of it is found in the character of the debonair Count who adopts his natural son after twenty years, resolved to give up his e launched his son upon a career, But the youth prefers the farm upon which he has lived, and returns to it after his father has for- bidden him to marry an attractive which was originally called “Papa.” His instructions to his gon in the ways of Paris may seem surprising, not to say shocking; but his very frankness is amusing, and the buei- nesslike way in which he rids him- seit of his lady loves affords a rare bit of comedy. He listens sympa- thetically to Naima’s account of her adventure witn a rich admirer, and when she tells of the man’s kissing hér, the Count suggests his perfect knowledge of technique in such deli- cate matters by abruptly shaking his head und exclaiming “Foo. soon!” Mr. Byron gives a spirited per- formance, notable for its skill and humor, and he never allows the move- ment to flag. Margaret Lawrence lends a bright, vivacious charm to Naima, but why e@he gives the girl an accent is pozuling. Possibly this is done for the sake of variety and color, and certainly it is done very well, As the simple Jean, embar- rassed at his first meeting with his father and generally ill at ease in strange company, Richard Barbee is engagingly awkward’ and sincere. George Graham ‘is quietly amusing in a small part, and Forrest Robinson plays a kindly priest sympathetically, "The translation of the play by That. lem Thompson is discreet and excel- lent, and the settings are in the best of taste, neighbor, Naima Duval, But when the Count gees the girl he is capti- vated by her and she by him, and so, if you please, the boy gives her up tv his father and decides to marry @ country girl, Tt is the Count;who makes “Trans- janting Jean" gayly French.
