ft New Tenor in “Tosca, »| GOOD “son STUFF” Prihoda, Violinist, And Danish Soprano By Sylvester Rawling. OSCA," Which was sung at the Metropolitan Opera House last night for the frst tine this season, sérved to introduce Mario Chamilee, a new tenor, as Mario Cavaradossi. That he was nervous sc might pass almost without sayiits, | but, from the first, he made a favor- &bie impression which grew stronger &8 the action progressed and jeft him Aenured of a success(ul debut. His volce is true, Hin personality Is pleas- ing, and his acting is intelligent. Mr, Chamlee is an Ainerican, trained at home, and void of European approval. For the rest, the principal singers were familiar, and the performance, under the genial direction of Mr. Moransoni, was of standard merit. Geraldine Farrar has ostablished herself in the name part. Scotti re- eins an unrivailéd Scarpa, and . Anapian {a an impassioned Angetottl. Malatesta, Bada, Angelo, Reschig- Han and Cecil Arden! rounded out the cast. The audience, perhaps because of the, weather conditions, was rather cold. More enthusiasm has been evoked by performances less worthy. Vasa Prihoda, a young Czecho- Slovak violinist, made a first appear- ance in ao recital at Carnegie Hall last night. In Italy he has won favor and especial encomiums from Tos- canani. He disclosed many admir- able qualities, especially in dexterity and finesse. His tone is small but pure and effective. It wes not a good night for strings, but the Paganini concerto in D major, with the Sauret cadenza, he played’ with convincing skill, and, later, Kreisler’s “Viennolse Caprice,” with commanding profici- eney. The recital was under the aus- ploes of Campfire Girls in uniform, and there were Czecho-Slovak cos- “tumes worn by many in the audience. Osta Doubravska was a pretty ac- companist of Mr. Prihoda at the plano. Birgl Engell, a Danish lyric #o- prano, accompanied by Coenraad V. Bos at the plano, gave a recital at Carnegie Hall yesterday afternoon. She disclosed a voice of pleasing qual- ity, of considerable range, and well under contro!, In her French songs she was at her beat. Her programme included a Brahms group, sung in English, a Scandinavian group, and an English group, At Acolian Hall, in the afternoon, Yolanda Mero, plan- fat, gave a recital of compositions by Bacu, Beethoven, Brahms, Gricg, De- bussy Bad Liszt, and In the evening at Aeolian Hall, Mr. and Mrs, Alex- ander Bloch gave a violin and plano sonata recital that comprised works ny Bach, Qeethoven and Richard Strauss, es < “LIFE OF THE PARTY” AT RIVOLI IS “FAT” FOR “FATTY” ARBUCKLE Roseoe (Fatty) Arbuckle has grad- uated from the Hne of comedy in which custard pie and watermelona predominate to become a ‘trust Duster.” But this rotund comedian in “The Life of the Party,” this weck’s offering at the Rivoli, is just as funny in the role of a lawyer spreading the “bunk,” who becomes the people's choice for Mayor, as in his former roles, when he revelled and wallowed in custard pic. He has all sorts of mishaps, from falling out a high of- fee window to being caught In a snowstorm in rompers on returning trom the gathering where he certainly Was the life of the party, The story is from the pen of Irvin 8, Cobb and "Fatty" makes the most of the comical situations and sneeses to perfection at the inopportune tme, There was a surprise in store for patrons of the Rivoll last night when Mr, Arbuckle appeared on the stage n person and told a few stories about himself and revealed séme informa- \ion about the making of the film, This is comedy week at the Rivoll and there is lote of mirth in all the pictures. “Faletaff's Dream” is given by the New School of Opera and there Is a Thanksgiving badlet. . —— THREE STARS SHINE IN “THE FURNACE” AT THE RIALTO THEATRE. ‘Mr. Reisenfeld has selected “The Furnace," a William D. Taylor pro- duction, based on the novel by the mysterious Englishman, “Pan,” for his cinema treat at the Rialto Thea- tre this week. This picture ts par- tloularly fortunate in having three stars—Miss Agnes Ayres, Milton Sills and Theodore Roberts. “The Mur- nace” in the main"is a sinple story of married life and the title is partiou larly approprate. ‘There is sone good photography ot claborate sets depicting the location of the honeymoon of Anthony Bond, the Canadian millionaire, and Folly Vallance, the dainty actress, Anthony on his wedding night sur rounds himself with a grouch, and it ig not until some time later that be is persuaded to come out of it and treat his. wife with the consideration duc her.
