ALTER GREENE, an Ameri- can baritone, gave a recital at Aeolian fall yesterday afternoon that was interesting. His volse has lovely quality and hb tains control of it in eve range. Something too much of the salon manner he held throughout his pro- gramme, save in the dramatic “Cain,” text and music by Rupert Hughes, of which he gave a firat public per- forminee. Soarcely weil set in its surroundings, It competed attention. In this composition Mr. Hughes has sought to portray the remorse of the first murderer. The form is that of @ narrative goliloquy in which, after the relation of God's sentence upon him for the crime he has committed, Cain tells of his own anguish and of his mother’s woe. Adam is not men- tioned. The work might have been epic, but Mr. Hughes's conception exceeded his powers of expression. Mr. Greene, in response to the ap- Plause, directed attention to.
