Theatre Ticket Hold- Ups Reach the Scandal Point; New Yorkers the “‘Goats’’ Men and Women Who Pay the City’s Taxes the Victims of Bare-Faced Extortion Because Rich “Out-of-Towners” Will Pay. By Sophie Irene Loeb. As set forth in the Evening World, Mhe theatre ticket speculation situa- , ton has practically reached the point of scandal-where it is almost im- Doasible for the average New Yorker] ; fo wee a play at a price that is Marked on the theatre ticket. After my experience in tfying to get @eats from Newman, the well known icket speculator at 1482 Broadway, as told in these columns, I went to the Premier Ticket Shop at 200 West 42d Btreet. There I talked with C. H. Cobn, one of the proprietors, I asked for two seats that wert @arked $4.40 on the ticket. He asked fme $5.50. These were in the 15th row. “Haven't you got them a little low- @r down?" I inquired, "Yes," he answered cheerfully, “1 @an give you the 4th row at $9.90, 1 staggered at this and sugg @nother play, “Tip-Top. “I haven't any seats for that,” he @ald, “but I can get you some. You ‘will have to pay $10.70." ‘ “Each?” 1 questioned, “Yes, each,’ he answered. “And you @ught to be glad to get them,” bi @milingly added, “Where will you get asked, “Ab, that’s a secret,” he said mys- terlously, “If I were to tell you, you would go and get them there your- elf. And then where would I come sar" 1 than went to @ place a few doors Below, a place called the Broadway Theatre Tcket Company, No, 218 ‘West 424 Street, A-woman was buying some seats from the proprietor (the clerk told me he was the proprietor), She was femonstrating with him for having charged her $6.60 for seats marked on the ticket $9.85 each, The woman evidently a steady customer and ha @ent somebody for the seats, VEN OLD PATRONS MUST ALSO “STAND AND DELIVER.” ‘The proprietor was trying to keep “her trade and he spoke something Uke this: “Why $6.60 1s no money for these feats’ my dear Mra, —. I get $7.70 all the time for them, Why a custom- er of mine bought four seats for elec- ton night for this same show and I wharged her 87.70 for them. She re- turned the seats and I resold them. She called up again and said she found she could go to the show and ‘wanted the seats back again. I tried to get some more for her outside, and what do you think I had to pay?— a Ose you've charged mo $5, $6 and 87 for the same seats,” the woman ar- “But I can't thelp that,” answered the proprietor. “Peon who want them will pay for them. ‘While the. argument was going on man came in and bought elght seats yr $7.50 each, the price marked on the ket being $4.49. Oot far from this place I went into @he shop of Louis Cohen, at No. 204 ‘West 424 Strest. A woman was try- fng to buy seats for "Tickle Me.” She wanted six. Ho asked her $6.50 each— jeventh row. Shey. ase <i mo $4.95 each for a phow the ticket of which bears the price $3.85. It was not one of the best eeliers. I could not purchase a seat there for anywhere near the price on cket. ri Royal Theatre Ticket Com- y, No 1568 apie ytih ae naan ticket for any good sho n Srenestra was $5.50 each, These ine cluded the plays “Enter Madame, “The Bad Man” and "The Bat.” But for real chloe seats the price was You couldn't get a seat “Tip-Top" for lesa than} 8.80. wh Tyson & Co.’ ted them?” I No, 1465 Broad- Way, there were some seats I could purchase at 60 cents advance of the a... Price marked on the tickets, but they could not furnish me with any good seats except on certain nights, unless | paid the price of the speculators, I was told here that I would have to y $5, $6 or $7 for the same seat on {ifferent nights, OPEN AVOWAL THAT SPECU- LATORS HAVE ALL BEST SEATS. At the Broadway ‘ivket Otfice, No. 060 Broadway, the prices Were ap- proximately like the others, and when T asked why it was, 1 was informed sas Musi UL Loe UcKeKs were now in the hands of the speculators, “For example,” said the proprietor, “practically 76 per cent. of the tickets for the Globe Theatre are in the bands of the speculators.” At the Equity Theatre Ticket Com- pany, No, 1669 Broadway, 1 found He asked me $3.86 a » Bat.” 1 was so sur- prised I concluded there was some- ning wrong with Uhose seats. J. L. If 1 would come around to-morrow th supply them, they told me, as speculators were letting louse of sume of them,” From one place to another I went in my Search for theatre tickets at a reasonable price, Everywhere the speoulators blamed It on each other— the aky-high prices, “I can't hep the situation, lady,” Said one of them. “I've got to pay a vig price for these seats myself to other specumtor: It's ‘the call for the seats that makes the price. Wh the speculators buy them all up there is @ demand created for them and the prices go up and you've got to meet them or do withoui the seats,” “But Is the public always to be sub- Ject to this thing?" +1 asked, “As long as they stand for it,” he answered knowing! And there he spuxe words of wis- dom, RICH THE DRUMMERS, AND FLOATERS RESPONSIBLE, The drummers, the travelling sales- men and the floating population of New York, who wiil pay any price to see a show in the limited time they are in the city are great game for the speculators, and the average New Yorker who pays the taxes, keeps up the Fire Department and otherwise aids the theatres to exist is gouged nearly every time he wants to buy a ticket . A clerk in One of these speculators offices told me how they got some of their biggest prices, THE EVENING WORLD, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1920. on iin? Dist. Brown, Mullen, Carlin.
