THE EVENING WORLD, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1920. ROGERS DENIED WRIT. GANG MEMBER SOUGHT AS SLAYER “OF LV. WATERS Police Suspect White Light “Leech” Beat Londoner to Death in Hotel. For the nrurder of Leeds Vaughn Waters, wealthy Londoner, globe trotter, one time husband of the “Baroness Blanc” and relative of wealthy New Yorkers and Rhode Islanders, Who was beaten to death in a room of the Plymouth Hotel, No. 2ST West 8th Street, the police are seeking @ man well known to the force. The shabbity dressed man who registered with Waters at the hotel at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, an hour before the discovery of the murder, is believed to be one of ao wang of leeches who prey upon wealthy men. It has long been a practice of such to ingratiate them- selves with persons they find in the White Light district who appear to be “under the weather” after a gay night, offer to show them to a hotel and, when they get them tn a rooni, strip them of money and fewelry. Waters ia belleved to have been escorted to the Plymouth Motel by one of this gang, and a general ajar wns sent out to-day from Pollce Head quarters: for the man who, the polic: say, steered him there. The Waters was beaten to death with one of the mur- derer’s shoes. The murderer was aaid to have been seen carrying a shoe as he ran from the room while the elevator was bearing John Carney, a ‘clerk, to the eighth floor in response to reports of the death batttle given by other guests, The man's flight took him down the back stairs, and the slow- moving elevator gave him time to puil on his shoe before Carney, who pursued him, could get within hatl- ing distance. The man’s trail was lost amid the crowds on Broadway a few minutes after he ran from the butiding. In Water's trunk at the Motel Gramatan to-day the police found pawn tickets showing that $1,400 had been received recently for Jewelry pledged. Waters was said to have been a devotee of card games and recently to have met severe reverses. Part of a suit of man’s underwear, bearing the initials “W. H. A." was found in the murder room. A check-up of the jewelry found upon Waters disclosed the fact that some of bis valuables were missing. The police found money in Waters’ clothing, in addition to a $2,000 dia- mond ring and other jewelry. They found a pawnticket showing police believe Waters had pawned a diamond pin for $800 on Oct. 27, and a bankbook | 30 showing he had deposited $300 two days jater His mother, Mes, Horace Waters, widow of the pianu — «ufacture. had come to the city to shop yester day from the Hotel Gramatan, Bronx: | ville, and was not found und told of da bri mi She collapsed, and after being treated at the Hotel Commmeaore was taken to the home of friends at Goldens Uridge, N.
