To Reta Final Thirty-six Holes of Na- tional Championship Being Held at Inverness To-Day. By William Abbott. } TOLEDO, O., Aug. 13. HE final thirty-six holes for the national golf title to-day make it necessary for Walter Hagen to pull one of his spectacular finishing | Spurta if he is to lead home the most formidable field that ever battled on | the links. The ability to rush from the rear and pass all opposition hap- pens to be the defending champlon’s | specialty. The same way that John Bali won so many British champion- ships Hagen has used to advantage, overtaking the leaders with the finish line in sight. At the final round for the 1918 championship Hagen trailed | Mike Brady by five strokes, almost a hopeless handicap, but he closed up the gap and defeated Brady in a play- off. Hagen etarts the last half of the present tournament two strokes be- hind Jock Hutchison, one stroke be- bind Jim Barnes and Leo Diegel and tied with Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, the British Invasion that slipped into dangerous positions at the end of ycs- men Hagen must stop, and, strange to say, the early arrivals in the gal- lory were quite confident that the American champion would emerge victoriously before night. Hagen cap- tured the national title in 1914 and 1918. Second only to interest In Hagen’s chance to overtake the field was the close surveillance put on Vardon and Ray, who negotiated their rounds yes- terday with 74 and 73 for 147 totals. From the outeet of the tournament Ray, because of his tremendous driv- Hutchison’s Good Putting ing nnd rugged physical condition, was made a favorite to win along with Hagen and Barnes, the two leading American hopes.
