He didn'v | By Johnston McCulley i A Thrilling Story of Mystery and Adventure A college professor decided to turn criminal! “Read this exciting story of his adventures with @ band of ‘daring thieves, led by a beautiful and mysterious woman. CHAPTER VIII, AMILTON BRONE seemed to be struggling through a valley filled with grotesque monsters, struggling toward @ realm of safety in the distance. Consciousness, fighting to make itself known in a mind charged with the images induced by alcohol and drugs, came to him slowly. But suddenly it conquered and Hamilton Brone was @ware that he was awake and his Drain sought to record definite im- pressions ‘and to call a lagging memory to its aid. A door was thrown open, a shaft of light entered. Hamilton Brone could see the shadow of a man. And then there came a soft click and light flooded bim and the space about him. And a hoarse voice cried: “At it again, are you? Stop that noise, or I'll give you something to howl for! Think you can pull this wbunt every night?” Weak, trembling, Hamilton Brone sprang back a step and glared around him. He was in a cage—a cell, Ad- Joining it was another cell. The two cells wene in a small room that had mo furniture except a couch in one corner and a screen in another. He glanced down at his clothes—a wonvict's sult. He felt of his shaved fhead again. Once more he sprang to Yeh! You started oft in the | limou- sine with that woman, old top, and you ran amuck before it had come three blocks. You tried to strangl: this Madam Madcap, and ehe yelle for help amd the chauffeur stopped the car’—— “I didn't!” “Shut up; I'm tellin’ this story, and you wanted to hear it. I should think you'd want to forget it. The chauf- feur stopped the car, I said, and tried to help her. You smashed him in the jaw and took it on the fly—mob at your heels. You dodged ‘em and went back to the cafe and walked in like you was: as sober as a judge— some judges, that is.” [—I don’t remember any of it"~— ‘Shut up! You walked” into, that fe and found this Melkington man sittin’ at a table with a couple of women. You sat down at another ta- ble and ordered a bottle of wine. Remember that? .No? Well, you drank the. wine, accordin’ to the tes- timony, and then you picked up the bottle, walked over to that other man across the head with it, crack- ing his skull neatly.” “T—I' did that? I didn’t*—~ “Shut up! You did, and you know it. About 300 people, More or less, saw you. There was some muss— women shriekin’ and men runnin’ around and all that. A nice time was had by all. You smashed half a dozen waiters before they got you down and sat on you and hauled you away to the cooler"— Hamiiton Brone, gasping, sprang to his feet. the bars and looked at the man who ‘wore the uniform of a prison guard. “What—what"——— Hamilton Brone began gasping. “You stop that notse or I'll tell the warden and he'll ‘tend to you!” the guard said. Brone stared at him in amazement. He did not know that this was a masquerade, that the guard was “Red” Riley, gangster, burglar, all- around crook. “What—does this mean?” Brone asked. “It means that we're going to have a little silence out of you, that’s all. ‘Think you can howl like a fool every night and keep better men awake?” “But you—and this place’ — “Are you ravin’ again?” Riles | asked. Madam Madcap had given ‘him full instructions and he rather liked the role he was playing, and | the opportunity to play ft. Riley| never had anticipated wearing the know the plans of Madam Madcap) or why she was insisting on this play-acting, but he was satisfied for the time being to ask no questions, “Where—am I?” Brone asked. “Why, in Westminster Abbey, old top!” Riley sneered. “Tryin’ a Httle comedy on me to-night, are you? Lest night you wanted fo preach a sermon.” “But I—1 don't understand” —— “What's the big idea now Tryin’ to make out you're sick and get sent to hospital? You'll get put in a ‘strait-jacket again, that's what you'll get!” He glared at Hamilton Brone the bars, shook his fist at him, Brone found bis voice. “What does it mean?” he asked. “How long have I been here? And where am I?” “A lot of fool information you're wantin’,” Riley told him. “If you don't know, and it'll do you any good to learn, I'll remark that you are in State's prison, and that you've been here two weeks—and a devil of a two weeks it's been!" “Prison? Two ‘weeks?’ Brono gasped. “I can’t understand! Why? ‘What for? I—I seem to remember leaving the cafe with—with a woman —and that's all.” “You left a cafe with a woman, all right, acording to the newspapers at the time,” “Red” Riley told him. “But that wes more than three months “Three months? Riley said pleasantly. “your act's good—gettin’ better every inute !” eFamiiton Brone sat down weakly and looked up at the man on the er side of the bars, ot What what does {t mean?” he asked. « what is it that you can't re- member" Riley ae “How much can you remember “I-—1 was at the cafe— “Where you had the row nan?" ee ola. ima to mind his busi- pess, I think—and told Lionel Wal- Gron the same, I remember pow! If you don’t want to listen to the mice little tale, why did you ask me to relate the same?” Riley asked. “Go on! What else?” “Well, they hauled you to jail, as you know very well, and all the time you kept howlin’ that you'd busted Melkington’s head and that you'd bust the head of anybody else who Hi tried to cut you out with this Madam Madcap person. That night Melking- ton slipped his cable.” “Dead? lace Melkington dead ?”" “And burled more than three months ago, you simp!" Riley told him “That made It a murder charge, of course. And you hopped into court and said that you'd done it and would do it again if the Judge would turn you loose and give you a chance. So we got you. And a sweet time we've had of it. You've been a ravin’ fool ever since you've been here— | had to be put in this room jn solitary —and if anybody asks me, I'd: say you're makin’ a play to get sent to the insane asylum and afterward re- leased—and that it ain't goin’ to work!" Brone clutched at the bars, his eyes bulging, his breath coming In quick gasps, a great fear in his heart. “I—I was found guilty of murder?” he asked. “You admitted ft—as you know very well, ‘There were about a hundred wit- nhesses—and you know that. For, while Hamilton Brone was sit- ting dumbly in his cage, clad in the prison sult, Madam Madcap was busy on new plans, She had had Riley get together all the memrrs of the old Duncan gang—Brute Wilger, Gentleman Joe Marget and Shifty Alade, his erstwhile enemy—and this « choice collection of gentlemen had all been won over by her chanm and sworn to follow her in her organiza- tion. Of course, the disappearance of Hamilton Brone created a great amount of stir and excitement. Mrs, Brone was prostrated, and Walton, who, in addition to being Brone’s friend, was one of the ablest detec- tives in New York City, immediately took up the trail, This, however, did not disturb Madam Madcap. With her organiza- tion once complete, she called a meet- ing in the large audience hall of the house of mystery. “To-night we shall enter and loot the residence of Mise Dorcas Dar- can,” Madam Madcap said, “It 1s just off Fifth Avenue. And Ruth in alt his big homers has come out a heavy wiriner by refusing to wait for the ball to break on the pitcher?s scheme, but instead, stepping back and walking into the drive. And if anybody can figure that as a sct performance he is welcome to the conclusion. The man is the greatest batter the game ever developed.
