THE NEW PLAYS “Florodora” Comes Back Beautifully Staged By CHARLES DARNTON COMIC PAGE I TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 1920 ji ORIGINALITY 1S COUNTS THESE DAYS. TU BET THE WoMen OM STAVE WILL Look PEOPLE WILL THINK 2M MADAM CARPENTIER WEARING A NEW FRENCH L KNEW THIS BIRD WOULD ATTRACT WATCH YER HEAD! ATTENTION. THOSE LADIES OPPOSITE HAVEN'T TAKEN THEIR EYES OFF MY HAT Sv OTH the endearing and enduring young charms of good old “Florodora” ‘were felt again at the Century Theatre last night when the Shuberts gave this famously-sextetted musical comedy the most dazzling pro- duction of its long career, a production that knocked the original one into a dilapNicted cocked. People who talk about “Florodora” in the same breath with “Hamlet” make me weary—to take an inelegant phrase out of the mouth of a thirsty comedian who spoke of “deported spirits” and, sadder still, inquired, “Have you met Mr. Anderson?” as he tapped a plaster cast on the head. Never) mind about the front-row days of Freddie Gebhardt and the show girl who | came into her millionaire! Tradition has a lot in common with cobblestones. | Any vague recollection I had of the Casino production of “Florodora” was ‘dztven into a corner of the Century. After all, and first of all, it's the music of Leslie Stuart, dainty and Suneful, that gives “Fiorodora” its real charm. The ‘Tell Me, Pretty Maiden,” nuutber is only one of several melodies that delight the ear. It must also be grented that Owen Hall had a touch of satire that possibly he caught from Gilbert. To Stuart's pretty songs have been added pretty songs, and pretty | ‘maidens etill live in this overgrown town. | Now for the test: The sextette girls were pretty, though not irresistibly fascinating. They were much of one size, with blondes predominating, but— ‘well, just ordinary human beings. It's enough to say they carried off the main thing, so far as popular judgment goes, in graceful fashion, dressed like the violet and behaving accordingly. Other girls wearing the plumed hats of other years, the ostrich boas and the black gloves, gave an unexpected turn to the proceedings, and then, if you please, there were kiddies doing the old stunt, and doing it inimitably, One tiny show girl, acting for all the world Ike a baby vampire, hugged a Ittlo follow until he was quite groggy, or at Pod rate a,bit unsteady on his feet, and by this means brought down the use, . Seriously, Eleanor Painter sang and acted Dolores as no one but Geral- dine Farrar could have sung and played the part. She was superb. George HasceH, as Tweedlepunch, was funny in spite of the fact that he looked like Wiftam Jennings Bryan. A more stately Lady Hollyrood that Christie Mac- Donald might have been desired, yet everything that came from Miss Mac- Donald's throat was pure gold. The gold of Margot Kelly as Angela was ‘ail in her hair. Walter Woolf had the “Shade of the Sheltering Palm” in his favor. and Harry Fender gave a good swing to “I Want to Be @ Military Taken altogether, “Florodora” scored a new triumph. - About Plays and Players By BIDE DUDLEY Vnen to the Hippodrome 5 next Saturday might wili bave . - | ths.
